Joe Elliott released a short impassioned video after discovering that some Def Leppard fans had been scammed out of money by someone impersonating the singer online. The singer interrupted a demo recording session to plead with people to think carefully before assuming messages from out of the blue were real, and condemned the environment in which it’s happening more and more often. “A friend of mine just emailed me with another one of these ‘have you seen this one’ fake Joe Elliott emails, where somebody has successfully scammed money out of some of our fans,” he said in the clip below. Def Leppard is commonly associated with the new wave of British heavy metal which sprung up in the early ‘80s. Yet, frontman Joe Elliott has revealed that he doesn’t like the metal label, calling it a “silly, silly term.” “I have an issue with the term heavy metal,” the singer confessed during an appearance on The Rockoneurs podcast, “because everybody outside of rock always thinks if you’re in a heavy metal band, it’s like bad news.” Elliott went on to explain that the term heavy metal carries a certain lowbrow quality. “You get this impression that everybody’s a moron,” he remarked. Joe Elliott has looked back on Def Leppard’s classic song “Photograph,” revealing some fortuitous circumstances that helped inspire the song. By Elliott’s account, he and his bandmates were “penniless” while they worked on their 1983 album Pyromania. At the time, the singer was living in a small apartment in the English town of Isleworth, and the home was not in very good shape. “The previous tenant, obviously on a drunken rampage one night, had punched a hole through the bathroom wall,” Elliott recalled during an appearance on The Rockonteurs podcast. “So it looked like The Shawshank Redempti...

Joe Elliott has spent more than 40 years as the frontman of Def Leppard, but the singer believes he was only handed the job because his bandmates felt sorry for him. During an appearance on The Rockonteurs podcast, Elliott detailed how the fledgling Def Leppard came together. “It was (guitarist) Pete Willis, (bassist) Rick Savage and Tony Kenning was the original drummer,” Elliott recalled, noting that the band’s priority at the time was finding a rehearsal space. The group eventually set up shop in a closed factory that had previously manufactured silverware. “This was a real Victorian dump h...

Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliott has defended his band against accusations they use backing tracks during their concerts. During a conversation with Stereogum, the singer addressed rumors that Def Leppard’s performances are technologically enhanced. “I don’t normally comment on this kind of stuff, but a friend of mine just sent me some link to something on YouTube, a recent posting by, forgive me, I don’t know his name, Chuck something from Testament, I think it is, and Chris Holmes accusing us of using backing tracks,” Elliott explained. “I don’t get angry at this. I’m flattered because their...
