Kosovo-born artist Petrit Halilaj (b.1986) this week unveiled an exhibition on a very special canvas – the rooftop at New York’s iconic Metropolitan Museum of Art. This latest iteration of his extensive “Abetare” project, first shown in 2015, is based on extensive research, comprising around 3,000 doodles he found on classroom desks both at his former school in Kosovo and in other countries in the Balkans. For his first major outdoor installation, Halilaj has created a collection of sculptures – 3-D renderings of the doodles – atop the Met. Although playful – his steel and bronze works include...

Serbia's path to EU membership now depends on its silent consent for Kosovo's assent to international organisations, such as the UN and Council of Europe. EU foreign affairs ministers gathering in Luxemburg on 22 April agreed to amend a key part of the document concerning Serbia's negotiations to join the EU, known as Chapter 35. The change means Brussels will freeze Serbia's accession process into the bloc if it doesn’t implement an agreement on normalising its relationship with Kosovo. The main condition for Serbia to comply with is that it must stop obstructing Kosovo's efforts to join key ...

As many as 2,000 Serbian soldiers are preparing for the final days of a major drill near the country's border with Kosovo. The drill, codenamed Vihor, comes after Serbian defence minister Miloš Vučević said Belgrade was ''not a punching bag" and that "no one will humiliate us''. A new flashpoint came earlier this week when the Council of Europe recommended that Kosovo become a member. A full 131 members voted for Kosovo’s accession, with just 29 voting again...

EU enlargement policy when it comes to the Western Balkans was the main topic of conversation at a debate organised by Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) and the Bled Strategic Forum (BSF) in Athens. The new Montenegro government's committment to align with EU standards makes it the most likely next addition to the bloc. To begin accession negotiations, candidate countries must first implement reforms corresponding to chapters of the EU "acquis" - a collection of common rights and obligations that constitute the body of EU law, incorporated into the legal systems of ...

As news came out of Pristina in late January on the introduction of the euro as the legal tender throughout Kosovo, many were left puzzled. Clearly, the issue at hand is not exclusively a financial matter. It's part of a broader context. Following a NATO intervention against Belgrade in 1999 and years of international presence, Kosovo adopted the euro as its official currency unilaterally back in 2002. However, due to the ongoing dispute with Serbia over its sovereignty, Kosovo was not able to this in the areas with a Serb ethnic majority, the residents of which continued to use the Serbian di...
