When same-sex marriage was legalised in Greece back in February, LGBTQ+ campaigners celebrated. Now, though, the British Foreign Office has issued new travel advice for queer people travelling to the country. An update, published on the UK government’s foreign travel advice page, has warned that same-sex couples could experience discrimination in certain parts of Greece. While it states that “attitudes are generally much more welcoming in Athens and on many Greek islands, particularly on Lesvos, Mykonos and Skiathos,” there are concerns that queer visitors could face prejudice elsewhere. The g...

When stepping out of Welsh director Rose Glass’ debut feature film, 2019’s Saint Maud, I was left in a prolonged dirge that I couldn't shake off. When the rotting fruit bowl I call a brain finally decided to resume its functions, the only think I could think to coherently gasp was: “Fuck.” As my sweary outburst suggests, there’s something so uniquely intoxicating about discovering a new cinematic voice. But with such a layered and nerve-jangling calling card comes the risk of the dreaded sophomore slump. Unwarranted fears, as it turns out, as Glass’ bigger, bolder follow-up only serves to conf...

"Were you rushing? Or were you dragging?" It really matters. The Russian republic of Chechnya is said to have ruled that all music should "correspond to a tempo of 80 to 116 beats per minute (BPM)" - meaning a lot of modern western music would be banned from being played publicly in the conservative Islamic society. The new standard of music is relatively slow compared to a lot of modern-day pop music, as well as electro, rave, dubstep and techno music – which tends to be of a higher BPM. Most pop songs range from 100 to 130 BPM, a tempo commonly used to create catchy and danceable rhythm. For...

More than 450 queer artists, musicians and writers have signed a letter calling for Britain's Eurovision 2024 entry Olly Alexander to boycott this year's competition. The group, Queers for Palestine, include the actors Maxine Peake and Brigette Lundy-Paine, band Goat Girl, and writers Sarah Schulman and Jason Okundaye. Their letter – which can be read in full here – comes after a number of countries and organisations lobbied for a mass boycott of the event due to Israel's involvement in the competition. The letter reads: "By refusing to expel Israel from the competition, the European Broadcast...

“It’s a big deal, it brings tears to my eyes.” These are the words of Maria Katsikadakou, better known as Maria Cyber, speaking about this year’s edition of the Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival (TIDF). Renowned as one of the first lesbian activists on the Greek LGBTQI+ scene, she has served as an adviser for the 2024 festival’s extensive (and timely) celebration of LGBTQI+ documentary cinema, entitled Citizen Queer. To say she’s excited about it would be an understatement. “I feel over-the-top happy, enthusiastic, and excited to be part of it,” says Katsikadakou of her consultan...

A Greek novelist and his partner, a lawyer, became the first same-sex couple to get married in Athens’ city hall since the country legalised same-sex marriages three weeks ago in a major change for the Orthodox Christian nation. The civil wedding between Petros Hadjopoulos, who writes under the pen name Auguste Corteau, and lawyer Anastasios Samouilidis was celebrated by Athens’ mayor on Thursday. Two dozen guests attended the event in the Greek capital’s city hall. Hadjopoulos described the event as “a dream that we didn’t dare entertain when we were in our teens”. He said there was a certain...

In the north Atlantic, halfway between Norway and Iceland, there is an archipelago of stark cliff faces, gulf stream-blasted land, and sheer volcanic peaks. Howling wind and lashing waves are the main soundtrack here… alongside a young queer vegan punk band changing attitudes. Just 54,000 people live on the Faroe Islands – part of the Kingdom of Denmark – and its inhabitants often describe the entire territory as a small village. Life in the village comes with its benefits. “You have to be nice to each other. You have to coexist in harmony,” says Fríði Djurhuus. ESNS Diary: Euronews Culture's ...

Police in Moscow were called to investigate an event in the Russian capital dedicated to the cartoon series ‘My Little Pony’ over alleged LGBTQ+ propaganda, according to organisers. The event, the Mi Amore convention, was shut down by organisers early on Saturday after officers arrived at the venue. Police were unable to find any evidence of LGBTQ+ propaganda at the event, which is considered an illegal activity in Russia. “The police received a complaint claiming that our event promoted non-traditional relationships and related symbols, adult content for minors, and general horror and darknes...
