The German charity SOS Humanity has accused the Libyan coast guard of threatening its crew members who were rescuing migrants in the Mediterranean Sea, causing at least one migrant to drown. Civil society rescue ship Humanity 1 disembarked 77 people in the southern Italian port of Crotone on Monday evening. SOS Humanity said the Libyan coast guard used violence and fired live bullets into the water during its “life-threatening intervention” on Saturday. The charity said that many migrants who were aboard three unseaworthy boats bound for Europe were forced to jump into the water. UK government...

Tunisia's coast guard retrieved the bodies of nine people who died after their boat sank on Thursday, marking the latest disaster for migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe. The coast guard also retrieved 45 people from the boat after it started to fill with water around six kilometres off the coast of Zarzis, a common departure point near Tunisia's border with Libya. Coast guard spokesman Houssameddine Jbabli said the boat, which was carrying non-Tunisian passengers, likely embarked from Libya. He added that survivors were transported to a local hospital in Tunisia. Several ...

Libya is again at a crossroads. One path is marked “Dead End” — that's the path we are on. It's a path to nowhere because expecting those who will lose power in elections — and with it their financial interests — to agree to organise elections is like asking turkeys to vote for Christmas. Turkeys never do, but this is the process the UN is leading. The other, more rational path is to support the new Libyan-led National Dialogue recently launched by Prince Mohammed El Senussi, the legitimate heir to the Senussi Crown of Libya, to break the deadlock. Rising above narrow interests to reunite our ...

Earlier in the week, oil prices saw some gains after Libya’s largest oilfield, the Sharara, shut down completely amid protests. Oil markets rocked by Libya’s supply pauseThe Sharara oilfield can produce up to 300,000 barrels per day, and is operated in a joint venture between Equitor, Repsol, TotalEnergies, OMV and Libya’s National Oil Corporation. Protesters mainly came from the Ubari regi...

By The Conversation Dina Rezk, University of ReadingA century ago, the coastal city of Derna was well known for picture-perfect beaches, palm trees and whitewashed villas mainly inhabited by Libya’s Italian colonial occupiers. Today, in the aftermath of Storm Daniel, which brought 400mm of rain to the region, overwhelming two dams and sweeping millions of tons of water across the city, much of Derna has been flooded. Entire suburbs are reported to have been washed into the sea by the tsunami-like wave that barrelled down the normally dry river Wadi Dern through the heart of the city. The death...

Washington (AFP) - The United States and the United Nations imposed sanctions on a Libyan accused of abuses of migrants amid growing alarm over human trafficking and inhumane conditions in the key gateway to Europe. Washington (AFP) - Private security contractor and ally of former US President Trump Erik Prince violated a United Nations arms embargo on Libya, UN investigators have found in a report detailed by US media on Friday. The confidential report to the Security Council, obtained by the New York Times and the Washington Post, said that Prince deployed a force of foreign mercenaries and weapons to strongman Khalifa Haftar, who has fought to overthrow the UN-backed Libyan government, in 2019. The $80 million operation included plans to form a hit squad to track and kill Libyan commanders opposed to H...

"We call on all external parties, to include Russia, Turkey and the UAE, to respect Libyan sovereignty and immediately cease all military intervention in Libya," the acting US ambassador Richard Mills said during a UN Security Council meeting on Libya, which has seen a decade o...
