Lithuania is holding a presidential election on Sunday at a time when Russian gains on the battlefield in Ukraine are fueling greater fears across all of Europe about Moscow's intentions, particularly in the strategically important Baltic region. The popular incumbent, Gitanas Nausėda, is favoured to win another five-year term. But eight candidates are running in all, making it unlikely that he or any other candidate can win the 50% of the votes needed to win outright on Sunday. In that case, a runoff would be held two weeks later on 26 May. The president's main tasks in Lithuania's political ...

Belarus claimed on Thursday it had intercepted attempted drone strikes by Lithuania on its territory – but Lithuanian authorities have dismissed the claim as a fiction. Ivan Tertel, head of the Belarusian Committee for State Security (KGB), said: "the KGB, in cooperation with colleagues from other structures, has recently carried out a number of acute security measures, which made it possible to prevent attacks by combat drones from the territory of Lithuania on objects in Minsk and its suburbs." He did not present evidence for the claim or give any details, claiming "radicals" in Lithuania an...

Two people have been detained in Poland on suspicion of attacking Russian opposition activist Leonid Volkov, an ally of the late activist Alexei Navalny, the Lithuanian president announced on Friday. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda announced the arrests to reporters in Vilnius and thanked Poland for its work. He said the suspects would be handed over to Li...

We have not been given it, so we wrote another note. As a response to this note, we have received a call from the Belarusian institutions that it is not possible to organize a meeting, because the Lithuanian citizen is dead,” says Asta Andrijauskiene, the Lithuanian Ambassador-at-Large to Belarus. Support for the EU in the Baltic states is high. In Lithuania, 79% of the population see EU membership as a “good thing”, 18% say it is neither "good nor bad" and only 2% believe it is “bad”, according to the latest poll from Eurobarometer. Significant majorities in Estonia (67%) and Latvia (62%) also see membership of the 27-state bloc as positive, the same survey found. There are many reasons why. The EU has brought multiple benefits to these tiny eastern European states, annexed by the Soviet Union until 1991. These include visa-free travel, economic development and human rights - to name j...

As NATO allies continue to reject calls to send ground troops into Ukraine, around 5,000 German soldiers are preparing to relocate to Lithuania in 2027, in a historic move that will see the first permanent deployment of German troops since the Second World War. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius visited troops in Bavaria who will be affected by the move. He said Germany has "experience with foreign deployments, including through the Battle Group". "Nevertheless, the conditions here are different, as we are talking about several years and, in many cases, deployments accompanied by families...
