New York (AFP) - Gusts of wind lash the runways of a former airfield in New York as migrant families with children slowly walk across, eyeing the city's world-famous skyline off in the distance. The field, described by aid workers as in the "middle of nowhere," is providing emergency shelter for 1,800 migrants, a potent symbol of the immigration crisis facing the American metropolis. Asylum seekers flanked by hangars and runways tell AFP they want to "start over from scratch." Many of the migrants at Floyd Bennett Field come from Latin America and Africa, but some are from China and Russia. ...

National Harbor (United States) (AFP) - With a red T-shirt covered in Donald Trump pins, there is no doubt as to which candidate Patti Douglas will be backing in November's presidential election. But unlike the former US leader, who Douglas came to see deliver a speech in the suburbs of Washington on Saturday, she has no reservations about giving Ukraine more assistance. "I want to help Ukraine... I think they are doing a really good job, but they need more help," she told AFP at the annual "CPAC" gathering of conservatives. While Ukraine marked the second anniversary of Russia's invasion on S...

Washington (AFP) - US border patrol and several states have found themselves overwhelmed lately, lacking resources to manage the thousands of migrants arriving from Mexico every day -- a crisis that has exposed President Joe Biden to intense attacks from his Republican opponents. Border officials have in recent weeks counted some 10,000 daily crossings -- an uptick from preceding months, which had already seen migrants arrive at an accelerating clip. There were more than 2.4 million migrant interceptions via land in the year from October 2022 to September 2023. On Tuesday, authorities closed r...

Eagle Pass (United States) (AFP) - At 32, Venezuelan Victor Manuel Atencio had finally had it: The crisis roiling his country, he felt, had ruined all his hopes for the future. So he made the difficult decision to emigrate to the United States -- a grueling odyssey that ended up taking two months and covering some 3,000 miles (4,800 kilometers) marked both by calamity and kindness. "It seemed endless, very exhausting," he told AFP, choking with emotion, after finally crossing from Mexico to the Texas border town of Eagle Pass, where he first set foot on American soil. "I had thought that the...

Tijuana (Mexico) (AFP) - While many migrants risk their lives chasing the American dream, Gabriel Zarate fled the rising cost of living in California and moved to the Mexican border city of Tijuana. The 38-year-old Chilean American now crosses over to work in San Diego as an English teacher during the day and returns home in the evening to Mexico. "One of the biggest reasons is the cost of living in Tijuana. It's significantly cheaper than in California," Zarate said. Also, he added: "I love Mexican people and food." His neighbor and fellow English teacher Mike Rachfal also made the move from ...

Turlock (United States) (AFP) - Just like any other Portuguese bullfight, the elegant rider deftly guides his horse around the charging bull's horns, before bending down to plant a bandarilha in its spine. Except that no blood is spilled -- the small spear is velcro-padded, and sticks to a cushion attached to the bull's back -- and most of the spectators' cheers are in English. The scene takes place in Turlock, a small town in the heart of rural California, where tens of thousands of Portuguese-Americans have lived for decades, keeping the traditions of their ancestral homeland alive, not leas...

Reynosa (Mexico) (AFP) - Haitian asylum seekers Jocelyn and Berline Jean-Philippe breathed a sigh of relief as they entered the United States legally from Mexico -- in time, they hoped, for their unborn child to become a US citizen. It is a dream shared by other parents-to-be who make the often-dangerous journey fleeing poverty and violence in their countries in search of a better life for their children. "If my son's born there (the United States), it's better for me and for him," Jocelyn Jean-Philippe said before crossing from Reynosa in northern Mexico to McAllen, Texas. It was the culminat...

Washington (AFP) - A Texas man admitted to trying to smuggle two people into the United States in a coffin draped with an American flag -- like those that carry soldiers killed in combat -- the Justice Department said Wednesday. The suspect, 33-year-old Zachary Blood, was caught when in October he drove a van "modified to transport caskets" to a checkpoint near the US-Mexico border in Texas, federal prosecutor Jennifer Lowery's office said in a statement. When asked by agents what he was transporting, Blood responded "dead guy, Navy guy," according to the statement. "However, the coffin was ...

Port-au-Prince (AFP) - More than 7,500 Haitian migrants were deported in less than three weeks by the United States, which chartered 70 flights, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Friday. Tens of thousands of migrants, mostly Haitian, had crossed the Mexico-Texas border since the middle of September, prompting the US government to launch an emergency expulsion program. "For two weeks we had a minimum of three flights a day and up to eight during the most intense period," Giuseppe Loprete, director of IOM in Haiti, said. The unprecedented mass deportations came after hug...

Mexico City (AFP) - With the United States turning away migrants at its southern border, Mexico is also taking a firm stance against undocumented arrivals, including thousands of Haitian asylum seekers. Mexico, which will host US Secretary of State Antony Blinken for talks on Friday, recorded 90,314 asylum requests from January to September, according to the Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance. That compares with 70,406 for the whole of 2019 and 41,059 in 2020, when the pandemic reduced the number of applications for refugee status in Mexico. As usual, Hondurans make up the largest propo...
