By Dimitri Selibas Tripling global renewable energy capacity was one of the headline commitments coming out of last year’s U.N. climate conference in Dubai. And increased mining of critical minerals, which are vital to feed these technologies, was a focal point at this year’s Mining Indaba, the world’s largest mining investment conference, held annually in South Africa. As mining company executives and African leaders flew in for the event, Rio Tinto banners to “reduce our carbon footprint” and “strive to advance the social and economic interests of communities” decorated the Cape Town airport...

By Justin Catanoso In the nonstop battle to curtail illegal gold mining across the Amazon and the massive damage it does to rainforests, biodiversity and human health, a Brazilian research team has sharpened an economic valuation tool to help law enforcement more effectively prosecute companies buying illegal gold for sale in foreign markets. The new research by the Conservation Strategy Fund (CSF) Brazil and published in January in the peer-reviewed journal Policy Resources is seen as bolstering the so-called Mining Impacts Calculator. The calculator was launched in Brazil in 2021 and adopted...

By Alex Shaw The global race to secure minerals critical to the clean energy transition is driving toxic pollution with severe health repercussions for communities living near some of the world’s largest cobalt and copper mines, a new report says. U.K. corporate watchdog Rights and Accountability in Development (RAID) and African Resources Watch (AFREWATCH), based in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), documented the devastating human and environmental impacts of industrial cobalt mining in the DRC, which holds around 70% of the world’s reserves of the mineral. Cobalt, mined as a byproduct...

A Polish coal mine near the Czech border will be able to continue operating for now, following the latest in a series of contradictory court rulings. After a long battle between the mine and environmentalists, the Turów mine has been allowed to operate under a temporary concession. "The decision of the Voivodship Administrative Court does not mean that the Turow energy complex will not be able to continue supplying electricity," said Andra Apanasionek, press officer PGE GiEK S.A. "The Turow mine is very carefully fulfilling its obligations under the environmental decision issued by the General...

Russian rescue workers have drilled a 70-metre long tunnel to reach 13 miners buried in one of the country's largest goldmines, representatives of the civil protection agency told Interfax news agency on Thursday. The miners are said to be trapped in a shaft 120 metres below the surface, following a rockfall on Monday. An estimated 9,000 cubic metres of rubble has blocked access to the miners since the accident in the Pionier goldmine in the Amur region, around 5300 kilometres east of Moscow. The authorities say there has been no contact with the missing miners so far. However, media have repo...

The 'lithium triangle' - spanning Argentina, Chile and Bolivia - is home to the largest reserve of lithium anywhere on Earth. This metal is key in the transition to net zero, used in electric car batteries, crucial to solar and wind energy and much more. But to extract it, mines suck water out of the white salt flats that cover this land. Land that has sustained thousands of Indigenous communities that have lived within here since before Elon Musk was but a glint in his mother's eye. As the world’s most powerful increasingly look to the triangle as a crucial puzzle piece in their plans, many w...

Europe's mining sector has been on the decline for several decades now, due to a variety of factors: At the beginning of the last century, Europe accounted for about 40% of global mining output. Now, that's down to 3%. China's growing dominance of the battery and rare earth minerals production and supply chain has been an ongoing threat to Europe, as it significantly contributes to China's electric vehicle sector and makes the continent, and indeed other parts of the world, heavily dependent upon China for these metals and minerals. Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which prompted a who...

By Sarah Sax In late December 2023, when communities in the southeastern Peruvian province of Cotabambas received a copy of proposed modifications to the Las Bambas copper mine, they were at first surprised, and then frustrated. The document, which arrived between Christmas and New Year’s, contained a proposal to almost double the mining operation but lacked detailed studies on its environmental impact on aquifers, wetlands and rivers, which are crucial to the communities. Yet, they were given mere weeks to send in comments. In response, around a dozen organizations sent a letter to the agency...

Norway will not go ahead with plans to permit seabed mining of critical raw materials on its continental shelf if initial exploration suggests it cannot be done sustainably, a foreign ministry official told Euronews, as the European Commission prepares to sign a bilateral agreement with the Scandinavian state on the sought-after materials.
