How many times has this happened to you? You’ve paid for a ticket to see a sequel to one of your favorite movies. You settle into your seat in the theater. The lights go down and the movie begins. Within a few minutes, you realize something feels … off. Maybe the violence has been toned down significantly. Maybe there’s less profanity or adult content than you were expecting. Perhaps your beloved hero has been saddled with an annoying kid sidekick. If any of these scenarios sound familiar, then let me extend my personal apologies: You have been hoodwinked by a PG-13 (or PG!) rated sequel to an...

Chris Pratt has battled Ronan the Accuser, Thanos, dinosaurs, and Bowser — is that technically another dinosaur? Whatever… But perhaps none of these classic movie super-villains were as formidable or as intimidating as young sister journalists Lyla (11) and Luna Polowy (8), who grilled the superstar actor about his latest gig playing the title role in The Garfield Movie, the computer animated update of the classic comic strip about a lazy cat who loves lasagna. Lyla and Luna didn’t take it easy on Pratt just because he’s a famous movie star either. They roasted him on the number of voice roles...

One of Hollywood’s worst summer movie seasons in recent history only got worse over Memorial Day weekend. The weekend’s big release, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, earned below expectations, and only narrowly outgrossed the week’s other new film, The Garfield Movie. Furiosa earning an estimated $26.3 million makes it the worst #1 movie over a Memorial Day weekend (excluding 2020, when the holiday fell during the worst of the Covid pandemic and most movie theaters were closed) since 1995 — 29 years ago. That’s when Casper debuted to $22.5 million over the weekend. No disrespect to the live-action Cas...

Hey!! Kids Comics This questionably punctuated phrase, found on top the old “spinner racks” located in old drug stores and magazine stands, sums up the appeal — and the limitations — of the first few decades of comic books. Comics were for kids, plain and simple. While the 1960s and ’70s produced some bold comics, it wasn’t until the 1980s that the public’s understanding of comic books began to expand as something more than those colorful little pamphlets for kids. Even that shift occurred, it was still many years before the media inspired by those comics began to encompass more mature themes ...

Think you want to be a contestant on Wheel of Fortune? You might want to think twice. Give the wrong answer and millions of people might be laughing at what you said on national television. That’s what happened to a gentleman named Tavaris this week after his episode of Wheel of Fortune aired. During one puzzle he gave an response that will surely go down in history as one of the raunchiest incorrect guesses in the series’ long history. There’s an image of the puzzle above. It’s a phrase. The second and and third words are clearly “in” and “the.” So what could it be:? Take it away Tavaris… REA...

The following post contains SPOILERS for the end of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, should you choose to witness them. Prequels don’t usually end with mysteries. They exist to explain; to illuminate the backstories and secrets of characters and events from other movies. In the case of George Miller’s Furiosa, the film reveals more than a decade of tragedy and pain in the life of the title character, who was introduced in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road as a haunted survivor (played by Charlize Theron) who wants to escape the clutches of her future’s brutal dictator, Immortan Joe. Where did this woman come ...

If you used to buy movies at the mall, it’s a lock you did your shopping at once place: Suncoast Motion Picture Company. Informally known as Suncoast Video to most of its customers, the chain was ubiquitous in malls all over the United States in the 1990s. The stores stocked hundreds of titles on VHS and later on DVD. They also sold music, and various movie and pop-culture related toys and collectibles. All the stores had the same distinctive red neon sign hanging over the entrance. If you grew up loving movies in the ’90s, just that logo alone will probably make you nostalgic. I worked in a m...
