Michigan designates Wednesday as 'What's Going On' Day as Marvin Gaye single marks 50 years
DETROIT — The State of Michigan is saluting an ageless homegrown classic. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, in tandem with the Motown Museum, is officially recognizing Wednesday as “What’s Going On” Day — on the 50th anniversary of Marvin Gaye’s groundbreaking, still-timely single. The museum said the designation is kickoff to a year of commemorative activities tied to the album of the same name, which was released four months after the single as Gaye embraced ambitious new sounds and a socially conscious direction. A “special tribute” document signed by Whitmer and Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist calls “What’...

From 'Soul' to 'Lovers Rock' to 'Ma Rainey's Black Bottom,' celebrating the new Black music movies
It's 1980 in the Notting Hill section of London in "Lovers Rock," the second of director Steve McQueen's Amazon Prime series of five Small Axe movies about life in Caribbean immigrant communities in the United Kingdom. The exquisite 71-minute film is one of the brightest lights of a burst of new dramatic movies — all prominently featured right now on streaming services — that put lovingly detailed re-creations of different eras in Black music at the center of narratives about protagonists who fall in love, contend with racism, and embark on searches for meaning. The mind-expanding Pixar animat...

Kid Rock marks 50th birthday, vows likely farewell tour, raises $200K for pandemic fund
DETROIT — The party was a little more intimate than the king-sized concert he threw in Detroit a decade ago. But there was a big dose of goodwill as the Kid Rock marked his 50th birthday Sunday night during an online event, raising about $200,000 for a fund supporting restaurants and bars imperiled by the COVID-19 pandemic. Streaming live for fans during a digital hangout, Rock was joined in person by a few dozen family members and friends — including Motley Crue’s Vince Neil, country stars Jake Owen and Jon Pardi, and former Detroit Red Wing Chris Chelios — for a celebration at his Cowboy Tow...

Album reviews: Barry Gibb & Friends, The Avalanches, Zephaniah Ohora
Barry Gibb & Friends "Greenfields: The Gibb Brothers’ Songbook, Vol. 1" (Capitol ** 1/2) As late 1960s hit-makers, the Bee Gees specialized in heartbreaking harmony singing. As 1970s disco superstars, they soared heavenward on Barry Gibb’s falsetto. The recent "The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" documentary on HBO is a stunning reminder of the British-Australian sibling trio’s excellence. So if 74-year-old Gibb, whose brothers Maurice and Robin died in 2003 and 2012, wants to head to Nashville, Tennessee, to revisit earworms such as “I’ve Gotta Get a Message To You” with Keith Urba...

Phil Spector, pop producer convicted of murder, dead at 81
LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Phil Spector, who revolutionized 1960s pop music with his "Wall of Sound" production technique but who was imprisoned in 2009 for murder, has died at age 81, authorities said Sunday. In his heyday, Spector was the undisputed king of rock 'n' roll producers, the "Tycoon of Teen" whose music helped define the soaring optimism of a generation. But the sharp suits and dark sunglasses favored by the diminutive genius gave way to prison clothes after he was convicted of the 2003 shooting death of actress Lana Clarkson. Spector was pronounced dead Saturday and his "official cause ...

Dylan, Young, Fleetwood: Music publishing sector booming with high-profile sales
New York (AFP) - The pandemic has left the performance industry reeling but music publishing, a normally under-the-radar side of the business, is roaring thanks to a frenzy of high-profile music catalog sales. The royalty streams of songwriting copyright portfolios can prove lucrative for the long haul, and increasingly are enticing investors even as other industries tank under the pandemic's weight. In many cases, the transactions have come at staggering prices: Bob Dylan sold his full publishing catalog for a reported sum of $300 million to Universal Music Publishing Group, while Stevie Nic...

Rocker David Crosby on songwriting, 'emotional voyages' and Donald Trump
New York (AFP) - Like all entertainers, David Crosby -- the mustachioed co-founder of both the seminal folk rock band The Byrds and the supergroup Crosby, Stills and Nash (and Young) -- had a disappointing 2020 that saw the pandemic ground tours and thwart live performance. But the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, songwriter and prominent Twitter personality has tried to make the most of it, working on a screenplay and new songs, catching up on music from jazz to bluegrass, and dreaming up a European museum tour for when it's safe to travel again. The 79-year-old is an adept social media ...
