Now two men have been charged with cutting down the beloved 150-year-old tree, prosecutors said on Tuesday (30 April). Daniel Graham, 38, and Adam Carruthers, 31, were charged with causing criminal damage and damaging the wall built in A.D. 122 by Emperor Hadrian to guard the northwest frontier of the Roman Empire. They were ordered to appear in Newcastle Magistrates’ Court on 15 May. Banksy mural: Do people care about trees more after seeing t...

Growing up, Teresa Vicente spent long days in Spain's Mar Menor swimming in transparent waters, cupping seahorses in her hands and partying under the moonlit sky. Out there, she recalled, time stood still. But over the decades, chronic contamination from mining, development and agricultural runoff turned the once crystal-clear waters of Europe's largest saltwater lagoon into a graveyard. A mass fish die-off in 2019 prompted the professor of philosophy of law at the University of Murcia to take action. Over the next several years, Vicente, now 61, led a grassroots campaign to save the region's ...

Small shampoo bottles, light grocery bags and other single-use plastics may soon be disappearing from the European Union after lawmakers in the world's largest trading bloc took a step closer to further bans on certain plastics. Other items facing prohibition include single-use packaging for fruit, vegetables and condiments in restaurants, where staff will be required to allow customers to bring their own reusable cups and containers with them when they dine in. The latest proposed restrictions come after the EU in 2021 banned plastic items such as straws and cutlery - and after the European P...

Emerging cicadas are so loud in one US county that residents are calling the sheriff's office asking why they can hear sirens or a loud roar. The Newberry County Sheriff's Office in South Carolina sent out a message on Facebook on Tuesday letting people know that the whining sound is just the male cicadas singing to attract mates after more than a decade of being dormant. "We have had several calls about a noise in the air that sounds like a siren, or a whine, or a roar. The sound is cicadas," it reads. Some people have even flagged down deputies to ask what the noise is all about, Newberry Co...

It’s Earth Day today, and legendary English musician Brian Eno has given David Bowie’s 1995 deep cut 'Get Real' a twist by using environmental sounds. Eno has remixed the track to incorporate the cries of hyenas, rooks, and wild pigs. The Piggy Who Sold The World, anyone? “In the nature remix of ‘Get Real’, a track I co-wrote with David Bowie 30 years ago, the animals are invading the song – it’s like it has sprung leaks everywhere and these animals are coming in through every window and crack between the doors. They’re sort of threatening – suddenly Nature has crept into the art.” It has been...

Bali's coffee gardens are the perfect place to relax, where you can sip your brew while looking out onto lush rice terraces lined by coffee trees carrying crimson berries. Most people come to try the world's most expensive coffee - kopi luwak. Often sold in pretty packaging, kopi luwak is made from coffee cherries digested and then excreted by the Asian palm civet, fermenting as they pass through the animal's intestines. Producers claim that the fermentation process alters the amino acids and therefore makes the coffee less bitter and easier digestible. It also is said to have a special aroma,...

You can now listen to ‘Nature’ on all major music streaming platforms. From Pink Floyd to the Beatles, natural sounds have been enhancing music forever. A new initiative will recognise nature as an official artist meaning singers, songwriters and bands who use these sounds can choose to add it as a featured artist. Some of their profits from streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music will then be shared with environmental causes. Revenue from tracks that feature nature will go towards supporting biodiversity protection and conservation projects as part of the Sounds Right initiative from...
