Around 3.7 million hectares (37,000 square kilometres) of tropical rainforest were destroyed worldwide last year, according to a global study. This is around 400,000 hectares or about 10% less than in 2022, the World Resources Institute (WRI) announced in Washington on Thursday. Hikers in southern Germany discovered 80 live fish in the grass next to a mountain trail in Bavaria on Sunday, according to police. The hikers immediately reported the carp to the authorities after spotting the live fish on the side of the trail near the town of Harburg, police said, but none of the fish survived. Investigators believe that unknown perpetrators likely threw the live fish into the grass from a vehicle. The trail runs near an electric transmission line. Victims of the Whakaari White Island eruption and their families have been awarded more than $10 million New Zealand dollars ($6 million US) in reparations, a judge ruled on Friday. There were 47 people sightseeing on the privately owned island when the volcano erupted in December 2019. Twenty-two people were killed and a further 25 were injured. In the Auckland District Court, Judge Evangelos Thomas sentenced five companies that took tourists to the island before the fatal eruption. The number of rhinos poached in South Africa has risen by more than 10% year-on-year, the Environment Ministry said on Tuesday. In 2023, 499 black and white rhinoceros were killed illegally, which constitutes an increase of 11% compared to the year before when 448 rhinos were poached, Environment Minister Barbara Creecy said in a press release. The south-eastern province of KwaZulu-Natal was particularly affected with 325 recorded cases, according to the minister. A Bangladeshi court has banned the capture of wild elephants in a bid to put to an end to the cruelty that the giant mammals are subjected to in captivity. Animal rights activists have welcomed the ban issued on Sunday. "It will definitely help stop cruelty on the young elephants [during] training.
