A new British mini-series about a barkeeper and a female stalker is rapidly becoming one of the most popular shows on Netflix. "Baby Reindeer" is about an unsuccessful comedian called Donny who works in a bar and who is stalked by a female guest named Martha (Jessica Gunning). "Baby Reindeer" is the nickname she gives Donny (played by Scottish comedian and author Richard Gadd) as she develops an obsession with him in a story that becomes increasingly dark. It is reportedly based on a true story, with Gadd saying he made the miniseries to process the disturbing experiences he suffered and to ex...

True crime podcasts are enough of a phenomenon that they’ve become a premise for scripted, fictional TV shows. Following on the heels of “Only Murders in the Building” (Hulu), “Based on a True Story” (Peacock) and “Truth Be Told” (Apple TV+), we can add “Bodkin,” a seven-episode thriller on Netflix about a trio who arrive in the sleepy Irish town of the title to investigate the disappearance of three strangers who went missing 20 years earlier. (If Hollywood is so eager to greenlight shows that reflect our world back to us, why haven’t we seen a bunch about union organizing? But I digress. Tru...

In 1998, Tom Wolfe published "A Man in Full," a novel about (among other things) Charlie Croker, an Atlanta real estate developer whose business and world fall apart, and Conrad Hensley, a worker at one of Croker's subsidiary businesses whose world also falls apart when he's laid off. Now David E. Kelley has written a television miniseries, premiering this week on Netflix, with similar characters in similar situations in the same setting, but so much is different, lost or added that adaptation hardly seems the right word. "David E. Kelley's Tom Wolfe's 'A Man in Full'" might be closer to the m...

In 2019, Prince Andrew sat for a one-on-one with the BBC programme “Newsnight” to discuss his connections with Jeffrey Epstein, who had been found dead in his jail cell three months earlier. The Netflix movie “Scoop” is the story of how the now-infamous interview came about. The TV appearance would prove to be such a public relations disaster that Andrew stepped down from royal duties shortly thereafter. For many viewers, he failed to give a persuasive refutation of the allegations made against him, or to adequately explain his friendship with Epstein, a convicted sex offender who was being he...

"The talented Mr. Ripley," the 1955 novel and first instalment of what would become a series about one of the most beloved sociopathic con artists in pop culture by American novelist and true master of psychological thrillers Patricia Highsmith, has been adapted for screen several times. After "Purple Noon" (1960) starring Alain Delon and "The Talented Mr. Ripley" (1999) featuring Matt Damon, Netflix has turned the acclaimed thriller into an eight-part black-and-white miniseries spanning more than seven hours and starring Andrew Scott, one of the hottest actors on the circuit right now (in eve...

The barrage of celebrity documentaries that have arrived in the wake of (and seemingly inspired by the success of) 2020’s “The Last Dance” tend to be exercises in image management. Unlike the dishier genre of celebrity memoir, these are scrapbooks for the screen. “Steve! (Martin) A Documentary in 2 Pieces” on Apple TV+ avoids some of those pitfalls better than most. Not entirely. Director Morgan Neville dutifully films Martin and collaborator Harry Bliss as they work on a 2022 memoir that tells the story of Martin’s career through cartoon anecdotes, and these moments serve no other purpose tha...

Two hours: Is it enough for even a part of any person’s real life, dramatized? The biopic form practically demands failure, or at least a series of narrative compromises made under pressure from so many factions: the real-life subject, or keepers of the now-deceased subject’s estate, nervous about an unsympathetic truth or two; the streamer or studio backing the project; and the filmmakers themselves, trying to do right by the person featured in the title, while finding a shape — and the ideal performer — to make the thing work. “Shirley,” now streaming on Netflix, constitutes the latest frust...

Taking on big ideas and future anxiety, the Netflix adaptation of “3 Body Problem” is a sci-fi epic lacking in philosophical heft. Based on a series of seemingly unadaptable novels by Chinese author Liu Cixin, there are grand ambitions at work here, but not enough to propel the series into a “Game of Thrones”-like phenomenon. That last reference is inevitable. Of the show’s three creators, two include “GoT” showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. They have teamed with Alexander Woo, whose credits include “True Blood,” and together they tackle the project with admirable seriousness and a focu...
