Kosovo-born artist Petrit Halilaj (b.1986) this week unveiled an exhibition on a very special canvas – the rooftop at New York’s iconic Metropolitan Museum of Art. This latest iteration of his extensive “Abetare” project, first shown in 2015, is based on extensive research, comprising around 3,000 doodles he found on classroom desks both at his former school in Kosovo and in other countries in the Balkans. For his first major outdoor installation, Halilaj has created a collection of sculptures – 3-D renderings of the doodles – atop the Met. Although playful – his steel and bronze works include...

As the great and the good of the New York art world gather for Frieze – the city’s most important art fair – there’s a new kid on the block: the Alternative art fair Esther, opening today (1 May). Running concurrently to the Frieze frenzy, Esther invites collectors, dealers and art lovers to experience the architecture and history of the East Side’s Estonian House. The choice of this elegant four-story Beaux Arts building, which has long served as an important gathering place for New York’s Estonian community, is no coincidence, with Esther’s founders hailing from Estonia. Chess history has been made by Nigerian master Tunde Onakoya, who has broken the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon. The 29-year-old's epic 60-hour game took place in New York City's iconic Times Square. Onakoya, who is also an advocate for child education, hopes to raise $1m (€937,000) to support children's education initiatives across Africa. He had set out to play the royal game for 58 hours but continued until he reached 60 hours at about 12:40 am on Saturday, surpassing the current chess marathon record of 56 hours, 9 minutes and 37 seconds, achieved in 2018 by Norwegian...

A man set himself on fire outside the New York courthouse where Donald Trump’s historic hush-money trial was taking place. The trial puts Trump’s legal problems at the centre of his closely contested race against President Joe Biden. It’s the first of Trump’s four criminal cases to reach trial. Trump has pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records as part of an alleged effort to keep salacious – and, he says, bogus – stories about his sex life from emerging during his 2016 campaign. The trial is expected to last for six weeks.

New York lawmakers are proposing rules to humanely drive down the population of rats and other rodents, eyeing contraception and a ban on glue traps as alternatives to poison or a slow, brutal death. Politicians have long come up with creative ways to battle the rodents, but some lawmakers are now proposing city and statewide measures to do more. In New York City, the idea to distribute rat contraceptives got fresh attention in city government last week following the death of an escaped zoo owl, known as Flaco, who was found dead with rat poison in his system. City Council Member Shaun Abreu p...

“I was seated at stage right,” Salman Rushdie read from his upcoming memoir, about the knife attack that almost claimed his life and left him blind in one eye. “Then, in the corner of my right eye – the last thing my right eye would ever see – I saw the man in black running toward me down the right-hand side of the seating area. Black clothes, black face mask. He was coming in hard and low. A squat missile. “I confess, I had sometimes imagined my assassin rising up in some public forum or other, and coming for me in just this way. So my first thought when I saw this murderous shape rushing tow...

An artificial intelligence-powered chatbot created by New York City to help small business owners is under criticism for dispensing bizarre advice that misstates local policies and advises companies to violate the law. But days after the issues were first reported last week by tech news outlet The Markup, the city has opted to leave the tool on its official government website. Mayor Eric Adams defended the decision this week even as he acknowledged the chatbot's answers were "wrong in some areas". Launched in October as a "one-stop shop" for business owners, the chatbot offers users algorithmi...
