Mike Jensen: Coaching (and sometimes playing) while masked, a 2020-21 thing
There are times Jay Wright looks out on the court and sees his Villanova guys run a play that surprises him, which isn’t really the norm. “I’m yelling out calls,’' Wright said the other day, “and we run something different.” First chance Wright gets, he’ll say to his point guard, “What were we doing?” Wright said he’ll mention what the call was supposed to be. Wildcats floor leader Collin Gillespie will respond with what he thought he’d heard. Welcome to 2020-21 hoops, where masked coaches and muffled conversations are simply part of the game. “During practice and obviously every game, I feel ...

Living with Children: What is COVID parenting?
What, pray tell, is COVID parenting? I need to know because over the past few months, several journalists have asked if I have any COVID-parenting suggestions. I went online and, sure enough, a fair number of so-called “parenting experts” are advising parents on how to “survive” shutdowns, as if having children in the home as opposed to attending school is life-threatening. Since when does day-to-day of living with children require a unique set of parenting skills? After doing some research, I realized that I may well have experienced COVID parenting as a child. There were, after all, days whe...

A recurring theme — giving up a slew of 3-pointers — costs Hornets against Blazers
There was nothing new about how the Charlotte Hornets lost Monday — 3-point defense. For the sixth time this season, the Hornets gave up 20 or more 3s. This time it was 24 by the Portland Trail Blazers in a 123-111 road loss. The Hornets are 2-3 on this West Coast road trip. Hornets rookie LaMelo Ball had 30 points and eight rebounds, making 5 3s. But the Blazers took a 19-point lead in the second half with Carmelo Anthony scoring 29 off the bench. Observations off the game: HAYWARD, ZELLER, GRAHAM OUT AGAIN The Hornets were again without three of their top seven players: Gordon Hayward (hand ...

Nets collapse late in 4th vs. Spurs, need OT to snap 18-year drought in San Antonio
The Nets hadn’t won a game in San Antonio against the Spurs since Game 2 of the 2003 NBA Finals. They snapped that drought in a 124-113 OT win over Gregg Popovich’s crew on Monday, but it didn’t come easy. The Nets held a 108-98 lead over the Spurs with 2:12 to go in the fourth quarter, then turned the ball over, missed shots and surrendered that lead as the game went into overtime. It all happened so fast: In one moment, the game was in the bag. In the next moment, not only was the lead gone, but the momentum had shifted all the way into the Spurs’ favor. The Nets went on to seize that moment...

Sixers’ chemistry on full display in 130-114 rout of Pacers
No one can argue that the 76ers don’t have great team chemistry. Their togetherness is on display each game during the opposing team’s pregame introductions. That’s when Dwight Howard leads several of the Sixers in a dribble skit straight out of the AND1 Live Tour. Guys are also always encouraging teammates and greeting with high fives when heading toward the bench. Monday’s 130-114 victory over the Indiana Pacers at the Wells Fargo Center was no different. Yet, the thought is the Sixers will need to make at least one move before the March 25 trade deadline in order to contend for the NBA titl...

Magic surge late but fall short against Mavericks
As the Orlando Magic found out, it’s hard to outscore the Dallas Mavericks. Luka Doncic finished with 33 points and nine assists as the Mavericks held off the Magic for a 130-124 victory Monday night before 3,766 fans at Amway Center. Magic coach Steve Clifford gave credit to the Mavericks but said he expected his team to play better defensively. “Too many mistakes on the defensive end of the floor,” he said. “Offensively we were fine, good enough to win but particularly in the first half, our side pick-and-roll defense, which is normally a big strength, blown coverages, spread out all over th...

Mets make changes to vetting and hiring process in wake of sexual harassment scandals
JUPITER, Fla. — The Mets have changed their vetting and hiring process in the wake of three separate harassment scandals that were reported in the past month-plus. Former Mets GM Jared Porter, ex-manager Mickey Callaway and former hitting coordinator Ryan Ellis were all recently accused of inappropriate behavior and unwanted sexual advances through reporting from ESPN and The Athletic. The Mets fired Porter in January within 24 hours of learning about his 2016 sexual harassment of a female reporter. Callaway, who has served as the Angels pitching coach since 2020, is accused of sexual harassme...

Kansas City police officer who fatally shot unarmed man last year will not be charged
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City police officer who shot an unarmed man nearly one year ago will not be charged, the Jackson County prosecutor’s office announced Monday. Donnie Sanders, 47, was fatally shot by an officer on March 12, 2020, near Prospect and Wabash avenues. Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said there was insufficient evidence to file charges against the unnamed officer. The officer told investigators that Sanders help up his hand toward him as if he had a firearm, Baker said. The Kansas City Police Department completed its investigation in the fall of 2020 and gave the file to th...

Cuomo’s apology shredded by alleged victim for refusing to admit ‘predatory behavior’
NEW YORK — One of the women accusing Gov. Andrew Cuomo of sexual harassment on Monday blasted his attempted apology as a “manipulative” exercise in victim-blaming. Charlotte Bennett, a former health policy adviser to Cuomo who went public over the weekend with claims that the governor made sexual overtures, said in a statement that his qualified mea culpa on Sunday smacked of a refusal “to acknowledge or take responsibility for his predatory behavior.” “As we know, abusers — particularly those with tremendous amounts of power — are often repeat offenders who engage in manipulative tactics to d...

San Diego Comic-Con in-person canceled again; online-only in 2021
San Diego's biggest annual summer event, Comic-Con International, has been canceled as an in-person event for the second year. Instead, Comic-Con will be online-only, just as it was in 2020. However, organizers said they are planning a different, smaller event sometime in November — although firm details about the plan were not available. In a statement posted online, the nonprofit that operates the event said safety concerns over COVID-19 continue to make holding an in-person event too risky. It also canceled its WonderCon event in Anaheim in late March. "While we are buoyed by the rollout of...
