The geopolitical upheaval caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict has reshaped Europe’s energy strategy. The EU's REPowerEU Plan, worth nearly €300 billion, aims to eliminate reliance on Russian fossil fuels by 2027. Central to this strategy is the role of nuclear power in securing energy supplies and supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy. This ambitious strategy places nuclear energy at the forefront of ensuring energy security and meeting climate targets. Notably, fossil-free hydrogen, derived from nuclear power, is set to play a critical role in substituting natural gas. Nuclear p...

Iran and the United Nations' nuclear watchdog are still negotiating over how to implement a deal struck last year to expand inspections of the Islamic Republic's rapidly advancing atomic program, officials said on Tuesday. The acknowledgement by the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, shows the challenges his inspectors face, years after the collapse of Tehran's nuclear deal with world powers and the wider tensions gripping the Middle East in light of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. Grossi has previously warned that Tehran has enriched uranium close to w...

Korea’s “artificial sun” broke its own record during a plasma operation in which temperatures of 100 million degrees Celsius were supported for 48 seconds, a promising new step toward nuclear fusion. The Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research or KSTAR had previously set a record of reaching 100 million degree plasma for 30 seconds in 2021, the Korea Institute of Fusion Energy (KFE) said in a statement. Nuclear fusion happens when two light atoms’ nuclei merge to form a single heavier one, generating a huge release of energy. This phenomenon powers stars, including the sun, which is wh...

EU leaders from 11 member states backed a declaration in support of nuclear energy during a conference in Brussels today (March 21) aimed at attracting support from development banks to finance the deployment of new and maintenance of existing power plants. Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Finland, France, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Sweden were among signatories of the declaration, which called on regulators to “fully unlock” the potential of nuclear and to “enable financing conditions” to support the lifetime extension of existing nuclear reactors. “We call for greater in...

EU countries representing more than 60 per cent of the bloc’s energy sector have committed to decarbonise their power sectors by 2035. New analysis by campaign group Beyond Fossil Fuels has found that 10 member states have committed to eliminating fossil fuels by 2035 or sooner. Four countries - Austria, Denmark, Lithuania and Luxembourg - have explicitly committed to replacing coal and gas with renewables. “It’s encouraging that many European governments share the ambition to usher in the fossil-free era by making 2035 power sector commitments. Now more need to follow suit,” says Tara Connoll...
