Paris (AFP) - Last month was the warmest February on record globally, the ninth straight month of historic high temperatures across the planet as climate change steers the world into "uncharted territory", Europe's climate monitor said Thursday. The last year has seen an onslaught of storms, crop-withering drought and devastating fires, as human-caused climate change -- intensified by the naturally-occurring El Nino weather phenomenon -- stoked warming to likely the hottest levels in over 100,000 years. Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) service last month said the period from Februa...

Paris (AFP) - Earth has endured 12 consecutive months of temperatures 1.5C hotter than the pre-industrial era for the first time on record, Europe's climate monitor said Thursday, in what scientists called a "warning to humanity". Storms, drought and fire have lashed the planet as climate change -- supercharged by the naturally-occurring El Nino weather phenomenon -- stoked record warming in 2023, making it likely the hottest in 100,000 years. The extremes have continued into 2024, Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) service said, confirming that February 2023 to January 2024 saw warming ...

Paris (AFP) - The year of 2023 was the hottest on record, with the increase in Earth's surface temperature nearly crossing the critical threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius, EU climate monitors said Tuesday. Climate change intensified heatwaves, droughts and wildfires across the planet, and pushed the global thermometer 1.48 C above the preindustrial benchmark, the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) reported. "It is also the first year with all days over one degree warmer than the pre-industrial period," said Samantha Burgess, deputy head of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S). "Tem...

Miami (AFP) - Shallow waters off south Florida topped 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.8C) for several hours on Monday, potentially setting a new world record with temperatures more commonly associated with hot tubs. The readings were taken from a single buoy in Manatee Bay, about 38 miles (60 kilometers) southwest of Miami, at a depth of five feet (1.5 meters). A peak temperature of 101.1F was recorded at 6:00 pm, but it remained above 100F for about four hours, official data showed. Jeff Masters, a meteorologist and former government scientist, tweeted that while there was no official world record...

Key West (United States) (AFP) - Billy Costello walks the deck of a ship wearing his scuba gear and fins, as well as a prosthetic right leg, before dropping into the sea. He's part of a group of US Army veterans wounded in combat who are planting coral in a reef off the southern tip of Florida. The mission is twofold: save coral that is threatened by disease and rising sea temperatures, and help veterans heal wounds -- both physical and emotional. A total of 31 veterans were joined by six divers from the Mote Marine Laboratory in Key West on a recent July morning to render their services plant...

Los Angeles (AFP) - R&B singer Frank Ocean has withdrawn from his scheduled headline slot at the second weekend of the Coachella music festival due to a leg injury, his publicist said Wednesday. Ocean suffered the injury before his performance last Sunday at the buzzy California festival's first weekend -- a highly anticipated set which began an hour late and was widely panned by audiences and music critics. "After suffering an injury to his leg on festival grounds in the week leading up to weekend 1... Frank Ocean was unable to perform the intended show but was still intent on performing, and...
