  • Motormouth: Trouble? The car will let you know

Q: In a recent column, you mentioned that a vapor storage charcoal canister can flood by overfilling your gas tank. If you squeeze in extra fuel over a long period of time, how would you know if the canister is actually flooded and not operating correctly? R.M., Elk Grove Village, Ill. A: The check engine light will come on. The evaporative emissions control system routinely performs self-tests. If it fails for any reason, including the vapor canister, it gets reported. Q: Chicago, like most of the northern U.S., has experienced bitter cold and snowy weather. I have a small space heater that k...

  • Covid Strikes Clergy as They Comfort Pandemic’s Sick and Dying

This story also ran on The Washington Post. It can be republished for free. The Rev. Jose Luis Garayoa survived typhoid fever, malaria, a kidnapping and the Ebola crisis as a missionary in Sierra Leone, only to die of covid-19 after tending to the people of his Texas church who were sick from the virus and the grieving family members of those who died. Garayoa, 68, who served at El Paso’s Little Flower Catholic Church, was one of three priests living in the local home of the Roman Catholic Order of the Augustinian Recollects who contracted the disease. Garayoa died two days before Thanksgiving...

  • In Philadelphia, a Scandal Erupts Over Vaccination Startup Led by 22-Year-Old

It started as a group of college friends who wanted to help during the pandemic. They had tech skills, so they used 3D printers to make face shields. Then they organized as a nonprofit, Philly Fighting Covid, and opened a testing site in a Philadelphia neighborhood that didn’t have one yet. This story is part of a reporting partnership that includes NPR, WHYY and KHN. It can be republished for free. The organization’s leader, Andrei Doroshin, had bigger ambitions. Even before the first coronavirus vaccine was authorized, the 22-year-old graduate student at Drexel University planned to get invo...

  • Elizabeth Wellington: The images of Kamala Harris as Wonder Woman are great. But let's be more realistic with our demands

I love Wonder Woman. In fact every year, between the ages of 3 and 7, I dressed up as Wonder Woman for Halloween. My little brown face covered by a plastic mask that looked just like Lynda Carter as the beloved 1970s version of the DC Comics Amazonian. So as the Biden-Harris campaign gained momentum and I started seeing varied images of then-Sen. Kamala Harris as Wonder Woman on mugs, T-shirts and posters, I was excited. The more I learned about Harris, the more I realized how phenomenal she is. Comparing Harris to Wonder Woman was a natural inclination. But there was something about it that d...

  • Flyers get hammered by Bruins' top line for second consecutive loss

There was a rather humorous exchange between NBC analysts Keith Jones and Mike Milbury last season in which Jones asserted that Sean Couturier was the Flyers’ most important player. Milbury disagreed, making an argument for Jake Voracek. “Well,” Jones said flatly, “you’re wrong.” For the record, an argument could be made that it's either Couturier or Carter Hart, but after a second consecutive loss at Boston, the argument for Couturier got a lot stronger. Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand each had two goals as the Bruins sent the Flyers back to Philadelphia with an ugly 6-1 loss. Even Hart, w...

  • Shake Milton’s 31 points lead Sixers’ rout of depleted Heat

PHILADELPHIA — This time the 76ers, with reinforcements returning, had no problem with the depleted Miami Heat. The Sixers welcomed back Tobias Harris, Shake Milton, and Matisse Thybulle, who each missed the past three games due to health and safety protocols and none of them showed much rust in Thursday’s 125-108 win over the Heat at the Wells Fargo Center. It was the second win in three days over the Heat in this baseball-type series in Philadelphia. On Tuesday, the Sixers earned a 137-134 overtime win. For the second straight game against the Sixers, Miami had the minimum of eight players a...

  • Need healing for the new year? A new hotline offers poems of hope

PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia poet laureate Trapeta B. Mayson on Monday launched the Healing Verse Philly Poetry Line (1-855-763-6792), a toll-free telephone line that offers callers a 90-second poem by a Philadelphia-connected poet. A new poem will be featured each Monday throughout 2021. In the context of a pandemic, a presidential election, and a racial reckoning, Healing Verse "offers a glimmer of hope because all those things impact us spiritually, mentally." Mayson said in an interview Tuesday. "And now, more than ever, we need spaces to process." The focus is on "affirming poems," she sai...

  • Danny Green sees Ben Simmons evolving his game as he learns Doc Rivers’ system

PHILADELPHIA — After Tuesday night, Danny Green will have played a total of six games with Ben Simmons – four in the regular season and two preseason tilts. So Tuesday was the perfect time to ask Green if anything new stood out to him about the All-NBA guard’s game. “I think we all knew how talented he was,” Green said. “I think now it’s just him grasping and understanding the system and forming into, which he’s not naturally as a point guard, you know, he’s a great playmaker as Doc [Rivers] would say. “And he’s good at making plays, but he’s still learning how to put sets together, put people...

  • New York man trapped in car for 10 hours after being buried by snowplow

An upstate New York man spent 10 hours trapped in his car after a snowplow buried his vehicle under four feet of snow, authorities said. Police received several 911 calls Thursday about a driver who went off the road along State Route 17C and needed help in Owego, a town in western New York just a few miles from the Pennsylvania border, authorities said. However, despite several attempts to find the car, no one could locate it. Sgt. Jason Cawley of the New York State Police learned about the calls, and went on a hunt for the wayward vehicle. As he was driving, he spotted several mailboxes stic...
