A joint survey of 23 surface and six groundwater samples from ten EU countries has unearthed high levels of a largely unknown and unregulated "forever chemical". The concerning levels of Trifluoroacetic acid, or TFA, were detected in Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Germany, Austria, Spain, Croatia, Bulgaria, and Sweden. The survey was conducted by member organisations of the European Pesticide Action Network (PAN), who called for swift political action to tackle the problem. It is currently not strictly regulated, as it is categorised as "non-relevant" by European authorities. TFA is...

As we try to strike a balance between the challenges of tackling climate change, promoting healthy diets and enabling farmer livelihoods, one thing is clear: sustainable agriculture is the only way forward. These three major challenges encompass the three dimensions of sustainability — social, environmental, and economic. The key question is, are we doing enough? Despite significant recent advances, there is clearly a lot more that remains to be done. It is evident that we need the European Union's support to boost food security, address important challenges within the agricultural sector, and...

More than 2.4 billion people around the world are exposed to climate change-related health hazards. A new report from the UN’s International Labour Organisation (ILO) has found that climate change is already having a serious impact on the health and safety of a “staggering” number of workers in all parts of the world. It estimates that more than 70 per cent of the world’s 3.4 billion workers are likely to be exposed to excessive heat at some point during their work. The figures from 2020, the last year for which data is available, are up from two decades ago when it was 65.5 per cent. Climate ...

Climate change could be causing a concerning uptick in the number of cockroach infestations in Spain - as well as alterations to their genetic makeup. So far this year, Spanish authorities have reported a significant rise in infestations - up by 33 per cent compared to the rate in 2023. Experts say record hot temperatures are to blame for these ‘mutant’ cockroaches. Increased heat means the pests’ metabolic cycles accelerate - and it’s particularly evident in the Germanic cockroach. That’s a worry as that variety is prevalent in homes and food-related businesses. Hotter-than-average temperatur...

In November 2023, despite strong opposition, the European Union extended authorization for the use of the toxic herbicide glyphosate by 10 years — and now it has abandoned its green pact pledge to reduce the use of pesticides by 50%. The current situation with pesticides brings to mind the asbestos tragedy — there are many similarities, including a failure of justice. In Europe, it was only in Italy that a criminal trial took place in 2012. And that is why we, as managers of European mutual health organizations and public health stakeholders, are calling for determined action to defend the rig...

Champions of organic farming have long portrayed it as friendlier to humans and the earth. But a new study in a California county found a surprising effect as their acreage grew: nearby conventional farms applied more pesticides, likely to stay on top of an increased insect threat to their crops, the researchers said. Ashley Larsen, lead author of the study in this week's journal Science, said understanding what's happening could be important to keeping organic and conventional farmers from hurting each other's operations. “We expect an increase in organic in the future. How do we make sure th...
