  • Tom Krasovic: Fernando Tatis Jr.'s struggles with shoulder argue for caution

SAN DIEGO — The strongest impression of the infant Padres season is how difficult baseball had become for Fernando Tatis Jr., a year after it appeared easy for him at age 21. Padres manager Jayce Tingler said the left shoulder injury sustained on a dive across home plate March 13 in the Cactus League may have affected Tatis worse than the player let on. Tingler noted Tatis sat out several games after the injury. The hiatus cut into preparations, creating a double-whammy later if Tatis in fact was still ailing more than he acknowledged. The manager suggested Tatis may have been "pressing" to li...

  • Commentary: Remembering the day Prince Philip looked me in the eye

I met Prince Philip, who died Friday at the age of 99, one time. He put his hands behind his ramrod-straight back and then leaned his statuesque self down to my height (I was even shorter then than now). He looked me straight in the eye and asked me how I got to school. “By bus, sir,” I piped up. “Very good, young man” he said, ratcheting himself back up, smiling and walking on. No one who knows me would describe my memory as photographic. But I remember that scene, and Philip’s face, with total clarity. It was November 1976. I was 13 years old. The Duke of Edinburgh, who was already 55, not t...

  • Editorial: Thanks, Zags, for lifting the spirits of the pandemic weary

Thank you, Gonzaga Bulldogs. You gave Washington and the nation a wild ride. It didn’t end the way anyone but a Baylor fan wanted, but it was a distraction we all needed during the winter of pandemic. Gonzaga’s men’s basketball team dominated the season like no team in a generation. They started the season ranked No. 1, and with each win they attracted more fans. People could sense that something historic was happening. The Bulldogs became the first team to reach the national championship game undefeated since 1979. And on Monday, it ended in profound disappointment. Baylor jumped to a 9-0 lea...

  • Editorial: FCC, restore limits to media ownership

The U.S. Supreme Court last week upheld the Federal Communications Commission’s wrongheaded decision to allow more media consolidation. This comes amid a crisis in local journalism, an epidemic of misinformation and growing division undermining America’s democracy. Media consolidation and the resulting disinvestment in local news are worsening these problems. The FCC, as reconfigured by President Joe Biden, should revisit the issue and restore limits on cross-ownership of media outlets. Specifically, the agency should restore rules preventing media companies from owning both a newspaper and ra...

  • Editorial: The All-Star Game moves, and businesses confront the perils of politics

The new Georgia voting law, signed by Gov. Brian Kemp last month, has divided Georgians and other Americans along partisan lines, with Republicans hailing it as a victory for “election integrity” and Democrats condemning it as “voter suppression.” But the fight has expanded beyond the usual political actors. Major corporations that declined to get involved in the legislative battle now find that staying out of the fray may not be an option. Major League Baseball came under heavy pressure from Black executives, Black players and civil rights organizations to register its opposition by moving th...

  • Editorial: Breaking the wave: How to stop rising COVID rates from worsening

President Joe Biden said that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott made a “big mistake” last month when he eliminated mandated masks and ended capacity restrictions on businesses. Nevertheless, new COVID virus cases there have decreased 24% in the past two weeks. That’s completely baffling to some New Yorkers, who, despite still diligently covering their faces in public and observing capacity limits nearly everywhere, have seen virus cases statewide shoot up 33% in the past 14 days — the third-highest rate of new infections in the country, behind Michigan and New Jersey. What gives? Don’t listen to know-not...

  • Editorial: DeSantis’ impulsive ban of ‘vaccination passports’ could have unintended consequences

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis really hates the idea of restaurants and theme parks making customers show proof of a COVID-19 vaccination before buying a meal or a ticket. So he signed an executive order last week saying businesses that require so-called “vaccination passports” won’t be eligible for state contracts or grants (The practical extent of that threat isn’t yet clear). Also, all governments are prohibited from issuing any kind of documents certifying a person’s COVID vaccination. The order says a requirement for vaccine documentation would “reduce individual freedom” and “create two class...

  • ‘Not a monk’: Rep. Matt Gaetz defends himself against sex charges as ex-staffer offers support

Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., defended himself Monday against allegations involving sex with underage girls and trafficking as a former congressional aide stepped forward to vouch for his embattled ex-boss. The staunchly pro-Trump lawmaker used very specific phrases to deny having sex with a 17-year-old and paying for sex. But the 38-year-old also acknowledged having an active “lifestyle,” before getting engaged last year. “I am a representative in Congress, not a monk, and certainly not a criminal,” Gaetz wrote in an op-ed piece for the right-wing Washington Examiner news outlet. “My lifestyle of ...

  • Karla Peterson: In a new FX documentary, life for women in comedy is no joke

Did you hear the one about the happy-go-lucky woman comedian? Didn't think so. This is not to say there aren't laughs galore in "Hysterical," the new FX documentary on the history of women in stand-up comedy. With a cast of interviewees that includes Margaret Cho, Sherri Shepherd and Kathy Griffin, how could there not be laughs? But as it looks at the many challenges facing women who want to tell jokes for a living, "Hysterical" — which premiered Friday on FX — will leave you both infuriated and inspired. You will be infuriated because in addition to putting up with showbiz prejudices (like th...
