Washington (AFP) - The United States said Thursday it would resume limited food assistance in Ethiopia, delivering to some one million refugees, but will keep most operations suspended after concerns of systematic diversion of aid. The United States will immediately restart food assistance at 28 camps inside Ethiopia that are home to refugees, mostly from Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia and Eritrea, officials said. But broader aid inside Ethiopia, which is recovering from a brutal two-year war in Tigray, will remain on hold as the United States implements more measures to prevent diversion. "Our a...

Montreal (AFP) - Canada's Supreme Court on Friday upheld an immigration agreement that allows authorities to bar asylum seekers from entering the country from the United States. The Safe Third Country Agreement, which came into effect in 2004, says that asylum seekers must make their application in the first safe country in which they arrived once they left their country of origin. The judges unanimously ruled that the accord did "not infringe refugee claimants' rights to liberty and security." In July 2020, a Federal Court judge invalidated the agreement, ruling that it violated the Canadian ...

Geneva (AFP) - A "perfect storm" of overlapping crises forced tens of millions to flee within their own country last year, sending the number of internally displaced people to a record high, monitors said on Thursday. An unprecedented 71.1 million internally displaced people (IDPs) were registered in 2022 -- up 20 percent from a year earlier -- amid mass displacement for Russia's war in Ukraine, as well as by the monsoon floods that drenched Pakistan. A full 60.9 million new internal displacements were meanwhile reported in 2022, with some people forced to flee multiple times during the year, ...

Washington (AFP) - President Joe Biden's administration on Thursday launched a program to encourage ordinary Americans to sponsor refugees as admissions languish despite record displacement around the world. In what he billed as the biggest innovation in US refugee resettlement in four decades, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the new Welcome Corps would aim to ask 10,000 Americans in its first year to offer a hand to new refugees. "By launching the Welcome Corps, we build on a proud tradition of providing refuge and demonstrate the spirit and generosity of the American people as we comm...

Geneva (AFP) - Russia's war in Ukraine has pushed the number of forcibly displaced people around the world above 100 million for the first time ever, the United Nations said on Monday. "The number of people forced to flee conflict, violence, human rights violations and persecution has now crossed the staggering milestone of 100 million for the first time on record, propelled by the war in Ukraine and other deadly conflicts," said UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. The "alarming" figure must shake the world into ending the conflicts forcing record numbers to flee their own homes, the UNHCR said in a...

Los Angeles (AFP) - Rohingya refugees sued Facebook on Monday for $150 billion over claims the social network is failing to stem hate speech on its platform, exacerbating violence against the vulnerable minority. The complaint, lodged in a California court, says the algorithms that power the US-based company promote disinformation and extremist thought that translates to real-world violence. "Facebook is like a robot programmed with a singular mission: to grow," the court document states. "The undeniable reality is that Facebook's growth, fueled by hate, division, and misinformation, has left ...

Washington (AFP) - The US government will streamline immigration procedures for recent Afghan arrivals to speed up their resettlement in the United States, the Department of Homeland Security said Monday. Some 70,000 Afghans have landed in the United States as part of "Operation Allies Welcome," launched amid the August evacuation of tens of thousands of people from Afghanistan, as the country fell to the Islamist Taliban following the withdrawal of US troops from the country. Afghans who arrived in the United States on or after July 30 this year will be able to take advantage of simplified p...

Washington (AFP) - An interpreter who helped rescue US President Joe Biden in a 2008 Afghan snowstorm has escaped Afghanistan with his family after hiding from the Taliban for weeks, the State Department confirmed Monday. After crossing into Pakistan over land, Aman Khalili and his family flew on a US government aircraft to Doha, Qatar, where thousands of refugees from Afghanistan are being processed by US officials for immigration, a State Department spokesperson told AFP. The Wall Street Journal reported earlier that Khalili, his wife and five children, who were unable to flee in the August ...

Washington (AFP) - The Biden administration announced Monday that it would double the number of refugees it will accept in the coming fiscal year to 125,000, amid rising pressure from people fleeing Afghanistan and other countries. President Joe Biden has reversed a trend begun by predecessor Donald Trump to push down the number of refugees accepted each year to a few thousand. Trump set the official cap for the current fiscal year, ending on September 30, at just 15,000, and actually admitted far less than that. Biden overrode that number after he came into office, pushing it back up to 62,50...

Landover (United States) (AFP) - In a warehouse outside the US capital, a dozen volunteers were busy loading tables, chairs, beds and couches to ready an apartment for Afghans evacuated from Kabul and thrust into new lives in the United States. List in hand, Laura Thompson Osuri, director of the Homes Not Borders nonprofit, steers efforts to kit out new homes for Afghans arriving in the thousands amid the United States' chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan after a 20-year occupation. The warehouse, located in the Washington suburb of Landover, has transformed into a sort of Ali Baba's cave with...
