As Madrid begins an ambitious renovation of hundreds of streets, the potent smell of newly laid asphalt is overwhelming some areas. Authorities have come up with what they thought was a winning idea to tackle the issue - make the road surface mango-scented. While the fruity fragrance is effective in disguising the odour of fresh tarmac, residents are both baffled and unimpressed. Taking to social media, madrileños questioned why the city council didn’t just plant real fruit trees, given they also mitigate the soaring temperatures in summer. In the last two years, the city council has cut down ...

Transport alone is set to make up almost half of Europe’s greenhouse gas emissions in 2030, a new analysis from campaign group Transport & Environment (T&E) has found. Emissions from transport across the continent have increased by more than a quarter since 1990 despite overall emissions being in decline. Since its peak in 2007, transport has been decarbonising more than three times slower than the rest of the economy, T&E found. “The good news is transport emissions in Europe have peaked. The bad news is other sectors are decarbonising three times faster,” says William Todts, executive direct...

By Srijit Das A 2019 photo of a damaged road from Thailand is being shared with a false claim that the picture shows the poor conditions of roads in India. Los Angeles (AFP) - A Mexican man accused of smuggling into the United States 13 immigrants who died in a horrific car crash near the border this month has been arrested and charged with federal crimes, prosecutors said Tuesday. The SUV crash -- when a packed vehicle collided with a truck in California after crossing the frontier on March 2 -- made global headlines, and came amid a fresh surge of migrants attempting to enter the country from Mexico and Central America. Jose Cruz Noguez was taken into custody while entering the US Monday after being identified to law enforcement by another susp...

Los Angeles (AFP) - All 13 people killed when a packed vehicle collided with a truck in California are believed to have entered the US illegally through a nearby breach in the Mexico border fence, US authorities said Wednesday. A 10-foot gap in the frontier barrier was found around an hour before officials learned of Tuesday morning's deadly crash, which took place around 30 miles from the border rift. Initial investigations "indicate a potential nexus to the aforementioned breach in the border wall," said El Centro Sector Chief Patrol Agent Gregory Bovino in a statement. Surveillance footage ...

Los Angeles (AFP) - At least 13 people were killed in southern California on Tuesday when a vehicle packed with passengers collided with a large truck in a "chaotic scene" close to the Mexico border, officials said. The accident occurred when the SUV carrying more than two dozen people -- including minors -- and a semi-truck full of gravel crashed near El Centro, California, said Judy Cruz, an official from El Centro Regional Medical Center. The area of the state is a thoroughfare for Mexican immigrants and farmworkers headed north towards California's rich agricultural center. At least 10 of...
