Patients treated by female doctors have a lower mortality rate when compared to patients treated by their male counterparts, a new study suggests. Researchers found this was especially true for female patients and observed a similar pattern for hospital readmission rates. The team published their findings in the scientific journal Annals of Internal Medicine. “What our findings indicate is that female and male physicians practice medicine differently, and these differences have a meaningful impact on patients' health outcomes,” Dr Yusuke Tsugawa, an associate professor-in-residence at the Univ...

Are androids our friends or foes? It depends on the context. Most G7 countries have mixed feelings toward robots, according to a survey conducted by United Robotics on nearly 8,000 people in the US, France, Canada, Italy and Germany, and received exclusively by Euronews Next. Although the majority see further developments as "inevitable," many people are still concerned that in the future, robots may just get too intrusive. Humanoid robots are already here. Scientists in the UK have found evidence that microplastics are contaminating archaeological soil samples. The discovery has the potential to upend the way historical remains are preserved. Tiny particles of microplastics were discovered seven metres underground in samples dating from the first or early second century. They were first excavated in the 1980s. “This feels like an important moment, confirming what we should have expected: that what were previously thought to be pristine archaeological deposits, ripe for investigation, are in fact contaminated with plastics, and that this includes...

The European Commission presented a series of actions to boost biotechnology and biomanufacturing in the EU, confirming a leak published by Euronews earlier this week. As previously reported, the Commission is planning to assess the current rules for biotech products market approval in a bid to make the EU regulatory framework and its implementation smoother. “What we hear from industry is that there are indeed huge differences, in what time it takes to have a product that is finalised and tested from the side of the business to being able to market it,” Vestager explained presenting the propo...

Researchers have identified new drug candidates that may be able to prevent HIV-infected cells from escaping detection by the immune system. A team from the Univerisity of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in the US made the discovery. Current therapy, called antiretroviral therapy, prevents HIV from multiplying which reduces the virus’ amount in the body to an undetectable level but it isn’t a cure. “We have excellent antiretroviral drugs that suppress HIV, but unfortunately, none of them clear the virus. If someone with HIV stops taking their medication, the infection will rebound,” Thomas Smith...

The Alef flying car was presented in Barcelona as a prototype vehicle of the future. It’s being developed by a California-based company of the same name. The company wants to produce cars that can drive on roads but also take off and land vertically and fly through the air. "It's really a flying car like the one you know from science fiction,” says Constantine Kisly, Chief Technology Office for Alef Aeronautics. “So it drives and flies. So why should it have a flying option? That's how you can use it efficiently, how we can drive efficiently without traffic. So why drive? Driving option is the...
