Austria's glaciers will have practically disappeared in a few decades, researchers studying climate change effects warned in Salzburg on Friday. "In 40 to 45 years, Austria will be largely ice-free," said Andreas Kellerer-Pirklbauer from the Institute of Geography and Spatial Research at the University of Graz. Of 93 glaciers observed, all but one lost length between 2022 and 2023, he noted. Most dramatic is the decline in the more than 8-kilometre-long Pasterze glacier, located directly beneath Austria's highest mountain, the Großglockner. Here a loss of 203.5 metres was measured, as recorded...

More than a third of the great ape population in Africa is endangered by mining, according to a new study. The threat to these 180,000 chimpanzees, bonobos and gorillas has so far been underestimated, wrote scientists from the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) in the journal Science Advances. The increasing demand for important minerals such as copper, lithium, cobalt and rare earths, which are needed for the large-scale transition to clean energy, has led to a boom in mining in Africa, they say. There are also other direct and indirect effects, such as the constructio...

A pig kidney has been successfully transplanted into a living human for the first time, a US hospital announced on Thursday. Massachusetts General Hospital said the genetically-edited pig kidney was transplanted into a 62-year-old man living with end-stage kidney disease. Surgeons from the Mass General Transplant Center conducted the four-hour-long surgery on Saturday. The procedure marked a major milestone in the quest to provide more readily available organs to patients, the hospital said. Mass General Brigham chief executive Anne Klibanski said researchers and clinicians were pushing the bo...

A research team has calculated that the Arctic could soon be ice-free during the month of September for the first time since records began, and it could happen as soon as this year. Sometime between 2035 and 2067, the Arctic could be consistently free of ice in September, according to the study published in the scientific journal Nature Reviews Earth & Environment. The researchers, led by Alexandra Jahn from the University of Colorado in Boulder in the United States, explain that individual events with high ice loss, such as unusual warmth over several weeks, could lead to an ice-free Septembe...
