The Queer Football Fanclubs (QFF) network has reacted cautiously to a possible group coming out as gay in professional football on Friday. Former German youth international Marcus Urban said in February that players from Germany, Austria and England could come out via a digital platform on May 17, the the International Day against Homophobia. "We think this is a double-edged sword," the QFF, a network of European gay and lesbian football fan clubs, told dpa. "Of course, we would be delighted if every player could simply live as they wish and this would not make any waves at all. Unfortunately,...

Summer, sun, and soccer. It is often a perfect mix and that was never more the case than in 2006, when Germany hosted the men's World Cup. Germany's 20th century history meant flying the flag or wearing the colours was frowned upon in some quarters, but that all changed as a modest national side finished third and enthralled a whole country, which opened its doors to fans from across the world for the party. "I think it's good that I'm no longer the only one with a flag on my car," said the then German president Horst Köhler. Many non-football fans in Germany think Jürgen Klinsmann's side won ...

As workers across Germany celebrate International Workers' Day, the head of the country's employers' associations said people should put in more hours on the job. "We need more work in Germany, not less," Rainer Dulger said in a statement on the group's website on Wednesday. "Germany discusses too much about the conditions of non-work and too little about the value of work," lamented the president of the Confederation of German Employers' Associations (BDA). The question of how to make Germany an attractive place to work again must take centre stage, he said. "This also means that we will all ...

President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has warned his fellow Germans against viewing political and social problems in the United States with smug superiority, given the increasing divisions and radical politics at home in Germany. "In my view, we look across the Atlantic with far too much arrogance and think that what has been happening in the United States for many years has nothing to do with us," Steinmeier said on Friday at a conference organized by the Frankfurter Allgemeine newspapers. "But we do not live on an island." Steinmeier said that Germany is still a long way from what has "manifeste...

The conservative opposition CDU/CSU bloc supported the measure, wh...

A stadium ban for women is to be reintroduced in Iran, multiple local news reports said on Wednesday. The reports said that the Iranian FA has ordered the ban to be imposed in the north-western city of Tabriz in the wake of "repulsive incidents" at a home game of local top flight club Tractor-Sazi. It was not clear whether the stadium ban only applies in Tabriz or for all matches. Tractor are one of the most popular clubs in Iran, with a large fan base including many women. Observers believe that a female pitch invader at a match last week is a reason for the latest decision by the FA. A women...

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, 46, has sparked a debate on people's behaviour on social media by publishing several hate messages that she said she had received herself. The harsh tone on social media is nothing new, she wrote on Instagram on Sunday, mentioning in particular: "Harassment, sexism, abuse, hate and threats." Unfortunately, this is part of everyday life for many, which she said worries her deeply. Frederiksen spoke of young people who take part in casting shows and receive racist and hateful messages, of journalists, researchers and civil servants who are threatened, of ...
