Russia on Thursday successfully test-launched a new heavy-lift rocket from its Far Eastern space complex, a lift-off that comes after two aborted attempts earlier this week. The first attempt to launch the Angara-A5 rocket from the Vostochny spaceport on Tuesday was cancelled about two minutes before the scheduled liftoff due to a failure of the pressurization system of the oxidizer tank in the central block of the rocket. The second attempted launch on Wednesday was also aborted by the automatic safety system, which registered a flaw in the engine start control mechanism, said Yuri Borisov, h...

Russia's second attempt to test-launch a new heavy-lift rocket from its Far Eastern space complex was aborted on Wednesday. The launch of the Angara-A5 rocket from the Vostochny spaceport was cancelled about two minutes before its planned time. State news agency RIA-Novosti said the cause was a failure of the pressurisation system of the oxidiser tank in the rocket's central block. The launch will be postponed for another day. The first attempt on Tuesday failed because the automatic safety system registered a flaw in the same system, said Roscosmos head Yuri Borisov. The launch was to be the ...

A Russian Soyuz rocket took off to the International Space Station on Saturday, two days after its launch was aborted last minute. The launch was originally planned for Thursday but was halted by an automatic safety system about 20 seconds before the scheduled lift-off. Head of Russia's space agency, Yuri Borisov, said a voltage drop in a power source triggered the abort. The space capsule atop the rocket separated and went into orbit eight minutes after the launch and began a two-day, 34-orbit trip to the space station. If the launch had gone as scheduled on Thursday, the journey would have b...

Russia called off the scheduled launch of three astronauts to the International Space Station just moments before takeoff on Thursday, but officials confirmed the crew was safe. The Russian Soyuz rocket, set to launch from the Baikonur facility in Kazakhstan, which Russia leases, was meant to transport NASA astronaut Tracy Dyson, Oleg Novitsky from Roscosmos, and Marina Vasilevskaya from Belarus. An automatic safety system halted the launch approximately 20 seconds before the planned liftoff at 1321 GMT. Both Russia's Roscosmos space corporation and NASA confirmed the crew's safety, with Rosco...

A rocket touted as Japan’s first from the private sector to go into orbit exploded shortly after lift-off. Video showed the rocket, called Kairos, blasting off from Wakayama Prefecture, central Japan, a mountainous area filled with trees, but exploding mid-air within seconds. A huge plume of smoke engulfed the area, and what appeared to be flames could also be seen in some spots. The video then showed spurts of water shooting toward that spot in an effort to put out the blaze. Tokyo-based start-up Space One, behind the rocket launch, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The la...

In Toulouse, France, the Cité de l'Espace is launching a new immersive experience: Lune Xplorer, where you can take a seat in a rocket simulator. You can climb aboard a spaceship similar to the one that will soon take man back to the Moon. Every detail is realistic, including the number of passengers: four per capsule. The simulator is in fact a centrifuge that reproduces all the effects of acceleration. "We were really caught up, glued to the seat... As soon as we moved our heads we really lost north and south, but it was really cool," said one visitor. NASA’s new climate satellite will offer...

Four astronauts headed to the International Space Station on Sunday where they will oversee the arrivals of two new rocketships during their half-year stay. SpaceX’s Falcon rocket blasted off from Kennedy Space Centre, carrying NASA’s Matthew Dominick, Michael Barratt and Jeanette Epps and Russia’s Alexander Grebenkin. The astronauts should reach the orbiting lab on Tuesday. They will replace a crew from the US, Denmark, Japan and Russia, who have been there since August. “When are you getting here already?” space station commander Andreas Mogensen asked via X, formerly Twitter, after three da...

A Russian rocket on Thursday successfully put an Iranian satellite into orbit, a launch that underlined the increasingly close cooperation between Moscow and Tehran. Russia's state-run Roscosmos corporation said that a Soyuz rocket blasted off from the Vostochny Cosmodrome launch facility in the country's far east to carry the Iranian satellite and 18 Russian satellites into orbit. The Iranian state TV said the 110-kilogram satellite has three cameras to take images for environmental, agricultural and other purposes. Iran's state TV said the satellite will be put into orbit around the North an...

Flight engineers are expecting to lose contact on Tuesday with a private US lunar lander, Odysseus, cutting short its mission by five days. It made history last Thursday by becoming the first US spacecraft to land on the moon in more than 50 years. But the company behind the spacecraft, Intuitive Machines, said it came in too fast and one of its six feet caught on the lunar surface causing it to fall over. The lander was due to conduct a suite of experiments that it was hoped would provide data useful for future missions to the moon. NASA, which plans to land astronauts near the south pole in ...

Intuitive Machines, a Houston, Texas-based aerospace company has landed its Odysseus robot near the lunar south pole. The landing is significant as it marks the first time an American craft has reached the Moon’s surface since 1972. It is also the first time that a privately owned spacecraft has reached the Moon, with all previous attempts being made by government space agencies such as NASA. Although the mission itself was a collaboration between Intuitive Machines, NASA and SpaceX. Odysseus has been sent to research lunar dust, and scope out the southern pole for signs of ice. On board Odyss...
