Spotify increased its prices on Tuesday for new customers in France in response to the government's 'streaming tax'. The monthly premium subscription will be raised by 13 cents to €11.12, while the family plan will rise to €18.21 a month, a 22 cent increase. The student subscription will go up by 7 cents a month to €6.06. 18 cents will be also added to the two-person plan, bringing it to €15.17. For customers already subscribed, they will pay more from June onwards, rather than seeing a change this week. The move means that Spotify users in France will pay more than subscribers in any other EU...

The ‘Play your part, Europe’ campaign will notify all free and premium users over 18 with an in-app message to remind them of the election cycle. Europe will vote for its next parliament in elections between 6-9 June this year. The European elections have had a recent upswing in voter turnout after a 40 year downward trend, but the youth vote turnout is still comparatively underrepresented. This has inspired new measures by some European countries to increase the youth vote. Belgium and Germany have both lowered their voting age to 16 – joining Malta and Austria. Greece also lowered its voting...

Neil Young and Joni Mitchell begrudgingly returned their music to Spotify last month, two years after leaving the platform in protest of its largest podcaster, Joe Rogan. According to Young, Rogan was using the platform to spread misinformation about the COVID-19 pandemic. “They can have Rogan or Young. Not both,” wrote Young to his manager at Warner Music Group. It turns out, Spotify can have both. And, no matter what you think of Young’s protest (or boycott, or whatever it was), his clash with Spotify is a reminder that tech giants have a funny way of getting what they want and resistance fr...

Taylor Swift has a new album out, so you can bet records are already being broken... Swift's 'The Tortured Poets Department' has broken the record for Spotify's most-streamed in a single day, according to the platform. It has become the first album in Spotify history to reach more than 300 million streams – in one day. Spotify wrote on X: "History made! On April 19, 2024, Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Department was the first album in Spotify history to have over 300M streams in a single day." Previously, the record was held by her re-recorded version of ‘1989’. That’s not all – the first ...

You can now listen to ‘Nature’ on all major music streaming platforms. From Pink Floyd to the Beatles, natural sounds have been enhancing music forever. A new initiative will recognise nature as an official artist meaning singers, songwriters and bands who use these sounds can choose to add it as a featured artist. Some of their profits from streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music will then be shared with environmental causes. Revenue from tracks that feature nature will go towards supporting biodiversity protection and conservation projects as part of the Sounds Right initiative from...

Last week Spotify officially demonetised all tracks with under 1,000 streams annually – a new policy that could see nearly two-thirds of tracks fail to generate any royalties. The new policy came into force on 1 April. Its launch follows a report published by the streaming giant last year, entitled "Modernising our royalty system", in which news of the much-speculated decision was first announced. Spotify says there will be no “change to the size of the music royalty pool being paid out to rights holders” – rather, this pool will be divided among the remaining eligible tracks, presumably meani...

It’s becoming increasingly obvious that speaking English is no longer a prerequisite for global musical success in the streaming age. After Luminate’s 2023 Year-End Music Report found more young US listeners are gravitating towards “world music” in languages other than English, Spotify’s Loud & Clear report confirmed that global listeners have developed increasingly diverse music tastes. The annual music economics report, which was released today (Tuesday, 19 March), found that over half of the artists who generated at least $10,000 (€9,220) on Spotify are from countries where English is not t...

Spotify paid out a total of $9 billion (€8.3 billion) in streaming royalties in 2023, making it the largest annual payment from any company to the music industry. The payout, which includes earnings distributed to artists and rights holders, was revealed in its recently published 'Loud and Clear' report. Previously, the giant Swedish digital music, podcast, and video service had been urged to "increase transparency" following criticism that it was failing to do so. "This is everything we know about how much is being paid out, how many artists are achieving different levels of success," said Ch...

The music industry has evolved enormously over the past century. When we look back at the technology that has emerged in that time - electric guitars, synths, amplification, records, tapes, CDs, mp3s - it’s all been for good in the long run. Even the technologies that haven’t stuck around - minidisk, I’m looking at you - didn’t really have a negative effect on the industry. But is the future quite so positive? It seems unlikely that we'll see the invention of anything as ground-breaking and physical as an electric guitar. Today's technological advancements are much more software based. Euronew...

Neil Young has returned his music to Spotify, two years after he removed it over the streaming juggernaut's exclusive deal with controversial podcaster Joe Rogan, whom he accused of vaccine disinformation. In January 2022, the celebrated American singer-songwriter, 78, announced that he would be removing his music from Spotify after episodes of Joe Rogan’s controversial podcast spread misinformation about the COVID-19 vaccines. At the time, Joe Rogan’s podcast was signed exclusively to Spotify. Young published an open letter saying he was removing his music "because Spotify is spreading fake i...
