New York (AFP) - US crime series "True Detective" will return for a fifth season after the recently wrapped up edition -- following two women officers in frigid Alaska -- proved a hit with viewers, broadcaster HBO announced Thursday. The series renewal comes despite an online spat with creator Nic Pizzolatto, who took to social media to snipe at his brainchild's new incarnation, reposting criticisms of Sunday's season four finale. Remarking on Pizzolatto's criticisms, Kali Reis, a co-star of the latest season, said "that's a damn shame" on X, formerly Twitter. The fifth season will see Issa Lo...

New York (AFP) - American football dynasty the New England Patriots have been compared to the Beatles for having the same leading lights for more than a generation. "Imagine what the Beatles would have accomplished if they had two decades together instead of one," said Jeff Benedict, the writer of a new Apple TV+ docuseries on the sporting franchise which had the same leading figures for two decades. "The Dynasty: New England Patriots" tells the story of the Boston-area sporting juggernaut's dominance between 2002 and 2019. Once a team of "losers", the "Pats", with their star quarterback Tom...

New York (AFP) - Audio streaming platform Spotify announced Friday it has renewed its partnership with Joe Rogan for his flagship chart-topping podcast. Sweden-based Spotify did not provide financial terms of the deal, but said a Wall Street Journal report that the agreement was worth as much as $250 million was "incorrect." It described the agreement as a ""multi-year partnership." Rogan signed his first exclusive contract with Spotify in May 2020, which the Journal valued at around $200 million. "The Joe Rogan Experience" topped the list of the world's most listened-to podcasts on Spotify in...

New York (AFP) - The first Harry Potter television series is set to be made, with author JK Rowling acting as an executive producer, Warner Bros. Discovery announced on Wednesday. London (AFP) - Britain's media, the main focus of criticism so far in Netflix docuseries "Harry and Meghan", on Friday hit back at the estranged prince and his wife, accusing them of lying and insulting Queen Elizabeth II. The royal family was largely spared during the first three episodes of the show, which aired on Thursday, with the focus more on Harry's early life and his resentment towards the media, which he blames of the death of his mother Diana. But the prince did accuse the family of unconscious racial bias, and the royals will be braced for next week's instalment, which threatens mo...

Paris (AFP) - The woman who picked Kate Bush for "Stranger Things", creating an unlikely summer smash, says Bush's song allowed the world a much-needed sigh of relief after the stress of the pandemic. As the Emmy-winning music coordinator for the Netflix show, Nora Felder takes a big part of the credit for turning "Running Up That Hill", a song first released in 1985, into arguably the defining song of 2022. After Bush's song featured on season four in May, it saw an 8,700-percent boost on Spotify, hitting the number one slot around the world. "No-one imagined what it would become. It swept ...

Paris (AFP) - Destined to be one of the most divisive films of the year, Marilyn Monroe biopic "Blonde" finally lands on Netflix on Wednesday after more than a decade of troubled production. While there is almost universal praise for the visceral lead performance by Ana de Armas, critics cannot agree whether the uncompromising, nearly three-hour film is an artistic tour de force or another cruel layer of exploitation perpetrated against the 20th century icon. For ID magazine, "Blonde" is "guttural, instinctive, anguished filmmaking that bends space, time, and every cinematic tool at its dispo...

New York (AFP) - Streaming giant Amazon has defended the racially diverse casting of its big budget series "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power," which some fans say distorts the world of J.R.R. Tolkien. Since the first two episodes of the series aired, social media has been awash with protests that the decision to cast Black and Latino actors in some roles was forcing diversity onto the original source material. Among such characters is fan favorite dwarf princess Disa, played by Black actress Sophia Nomvete. But other fans saw the diversity as a welcome development in the fantasy unive...
