Washington (AFP) - Dozens of American Airlines flight attendants demonstrated Thursday in front of the White House as they seek to be allowed to strike during protracted contract negotiations. The Association of Professional Flight Attendants organized the Washington rally along with parallel events at about a dozen US airports. "Flight Attendants are the only employees at American Airlines who have not had a raise in the past five years," said the APFA, which represents more than 27,000 workers at the big US carrier. "We've reached an impasse with American Airlines in our negotiations, and we...

New York (AFP) - Around 7,200 workers with Daimler Truck in three southern US states were poised Friday for a potential strike as labor contract talks headed down to the wire. Representatives for the United Auto Workers and Daimler Truck have been in talks over a new contract to replace the one that expires at midnight Friday night for workers who build long-haul trucks and buses. The UAW, led by President Shawn Fain, has vowed to strike at Daimler's sites, comprised of four industrial sites in North Carolina and one each in Tennessee and Georgia, if key demands are not met. In a webcast earli...

Washington (AFP) - American forces shot down a drone off Yemen on Thursday and later destroyed an explosives-laden uncrewed surface vessel that threatened ships in the Red Sea, the US military said. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) also said Yemen's Iran-backed Huthi rebels launched two anti-ship missiles that were possibly aimed at a cargo ship in the Red Sea, but that the missiles did not hit the vessel. There has been a sharp uptick in Huthi military activity and US strikes and shootdowns in recent days, presenting further challenges for Washington as it prepares what it has promised will b...

Washington (AFP) - American forces destroyed a missile belonging to Yemen's Iran-backed Huthi rebels on Wednesday that posed an "imminent threat" to US aircraft, the military said. The United States has carried out strikes on the Huthis both unilaterally and jointly with Britain, but previous air raids were focused on reducing the rebels' ability to target international shipping rather than addressing a danger to aircraft. US forces "struck and destroyed a Huthi surface-to-air missile that was prepared to launch" after determining that it "presented an imminent threat to US aircraft," US Centr...

Washington (AFP) - Hundreds of staff at The Washington Post, one of America's most storied newspapers, walked off the job Thursday in a 24-hour strike after 18 months of contract negotiations failed to secure a deal. Chanting "Fair pay now" and raising signs reading "Show us the $$$$," staff and supporters protested outside the paper's downtown Washington offices as the Post Guild estimated 750 people would be engaging in the work stoppage. The strike comes amid a tumultuous US media landscape, which has not spared the national daily, owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos -- one of the world's ri...

Los Angeles (AFP) - Hollywood actors overwhelmingly ratified a new, hard-fought deal with studios on Tuesday that paves the way for a rebound of an entertainment industry that had seen film and television production come to a halt during a months-long strike. The Screen Actors Guild, known as SAG-AFTRA, said 78 percent of members who voted approved the multiyear contract. "This is a golden age for SAG-AFTRA, and our union has never been more powerful," union president Fran Drescher said in a statement. The deal includes more than $1 billion in new compensation and benefits as well as protectio...

Washington (AFP) - Hundreds of staff at The Washington Post, one of America's most storied newspapers, will walk off the job for 24 hours Thursday, their union announced, slamming the company for refusing to negotiate a contract "in good faith." The strike comes after 18 months of failed talks to reach a new deal over pay, remote work, and other conditions -- and after the daily, owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, warned more layoffs were possible. Labor unions are galvanized in America's tight labor market, with everyone from Hollywood writers and actors to auto workers to baristas taking th...

New York (AFP) - General Motors announced hefty new initiatives Wednesday to return billions of dollars to shareholders, lifting its stock price as it estimated the recent labor strike hit at $1.1 billion. The automaker lost about 95,000 vehicles in 2023 due to the United Auto Workers labor stoppage, executives said, adding that the overall cost of the new multi-year contract was modestly higher than executives had expected. GM announced a $10 billion "accelerated" share repurchase program and plans to boost its dividend by 33 percent. "GM will deliver very strong profits in 2023," said Chief ...

Stockholm (AFP) - Electric carmaker Tesla on Monday filed a lawsuit against the Swedish state over a strike by postal workers blocking deliveries of license plates for its new cars -- and received a first favourable decision the same day. Tesla is currently facing strikes on multiple fronts in Sweden over its refusal to sign a collective wage agreement for its mechanics. On November 20, Swedish postal workers joined in and began halting deliveries to Tesla offices and repair shops. As licence plates for new cars are only delivered by mail in Sweden, the blockade could stop new Teslas hitting t...
