This year, however, it may not have been the only reason why more than 3.1 million visitors - a one-month record, according to Japan's National Tourism Organisation - visited the Land of the Rising Sun. Foreign tourists have been making the most of their harder currencies such as the euro and dollar to gain from an advantageous exchange rate with Japan's weaker currency. Airbnb is well known for promoting unusual - some may say gimmicky - listings, ranging from Barbie’s Dream House to Shrek’s Swamp from the animated classic. For May, the holiday rental company has launched a new category they’re calling Icons. Eleven have been released so far, ranging from a once-in-a-lifetime stay at Paris’ iconic Musée d’Orsay during the Olympics, to a night in the balloon festooned house from Pixar favourite ‘Up’. None of the Airbnbs on offer are permanent, meaning very few people will be able to try them out. If you’re keen, though, the Icons are featured in their own cate...

By Brian Cheng West Kowloon Cultural District says this year’s International Cultural Summit will “demonstrate Hong Kong’s commitment to acting as an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange.“ The same phrase frequently crops up in campaigns by the Tourism Board and fellow government departments. It has become especially popular since it was mentioned in the state’s latest Five-year Plan, and subsequently in the city government’s policy address. The chairman of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council claimed in a press release that the city is “an international metropolis with...

A Taliban-run institute is training tourism and hospitality professionals to attract visitors to Afghanistan. Its debut student cohort consists of around 30 men, who are being trained in a Kabul classroom. The students vary in age, education level and professional experience. They're all men - Afghan women are banned from studying beyond sixth grade - and they don't know anything about tourism or hospitality. But they are all eager to promote a different side of Afghanistan. And the Taliban are happy to help. Afghanistan’s rulers are pariahs on the global stage, largely because of their restri...

Namibian authorities have heavily criticised a group of tourists who posed naked on the popular ‘Big Daddy’ dune in the Namib desert. Three male visitors are said to have taken their clothes off for pictures and videos during a dune safari after hiking up the sandbank, which is more than 300 metres tall. The resulting images were then shared on social media and circulated widely. That prompted local officials to say they were “shocked” by the incident and to claim that the act was a public indecency violation of park regulations and national law. How did the incident at Big Daddy dune come abo...

With its rugged coastline and pristine natural beauty, Corsica is a jewel in the Mediterranean Sea. The French island, just a stone's throw north of Italy's Sardinia, attracts millions of tourists each year, but only very few of them ever become aware that the mafia is holding Corsica in its ironclad grip. For the locals, threats, hush money payments and fudged construction work are part of daily reality. It's also not rare for people to be killed by the mafia. Often dubbed "the island of beauty," Corsica is the region in France, excluding its overseas territories, with the highest murder rate...
