There are a lot of aspects about rock ‘n’ roll music that are up for interpretation. Lyrics — as in the actual words a songwriter put to page and copyrighted — are not one of them. Even if a songwriter sings something different in concert, it’s the recorded version — the one that gets played on radio stations and turntables all around the world — that fans typically latch onto and learn the lyrics from. No musician is safe from the phenomenon known as misheard lyrics. Sometimes it’s a matter of poor enunciation, other times it boils down to simply hearing it a particular way and not being able...

Deep Purple’sMachine Head was plagued with problems from the beginning. “It’s a project that almost got destroyed before it even got started,” bassist Roger Glover says in a very matter-of-fact manner during an interview with UCR. Frank Zappa was playing a casino gig in Montreux, Switzerland when a fan in the audience fired a flare gun at the ceiling, setting the venue on fire. The casino burned to the ground. Here’s the problem: Deep Purple had booked that same room to record their sixth studio album — and in an instant, they found themselves in need of a new plan. By the time they settled in...

Heart has enjoyed a longer career spanning multiple decades, but the band has definitely had to evolve along the way. During an appearance on the Broken Record podcast, Nancy Wilson noted the challenges her group faced going from the ‘70s to the ‘80s. “We were kind of victims of longevity in a certain way because the styles change and you want to not change that much,” the guitarist explained, noting that the “mind-expanded perspective” which permeated during the ‘70s gave way to the “cocaine perspective, which was a little more money and ego driven.” Following mainstream success in the ‘70s, ...

The singer had split with Motley Crue after being accused of having lost interest in making music. David Lee Roth‘s brief, contentious and unproductive 1996 reunion with Van Halen left the singer wondering if the band had ever really shared the same vision. The following year, in his book Crazy From the Heat, Roth told his side of the original Van Halen lineup’s short-lived second and final era. He says that it all began he offered an olive branch to Eddie Van Halen right around the time the group broke up with his replacement, Sammy Hagar. To his surprise, the guitar legend invited Roth to record two new songs for a career-spanning greatest hits album. Van Halen’s 1996 Reunion With David L...

Nancy Wilson has looked back on the early days of Heart, admitting her band was “so jealous” of Fleetwood Mac. During an appearance on the Broken Record podcast, Wilson recalled watching Fleetwood Mac’s monumental success in the ‘70s. “They were happening right before us, kind of as Heart was just starting to tiptoe into the scene, and they already had Rumours out there,” the guitarist remembered. “We were just trying so hard to make an album and get out there and get a tour or whatever, and they were all over the radio.” As Wilson explained, her envy wasn’t just about commercial success. She ...

A three-year hunt to identify a lost ‘80s song ended when one of the tens of thousands of people involved in the search found it in an adult movie soundtrack. The “lostwave” hobby involves trying to locate details of music created before the internet era. In 2021, an extremely low-quality 17-second clip was uploaded to the WatZatSong community by a user who said they couldn’t remember where they’d got it from, guessing it was an early attempt to digitize music from an analog medium. The clip became known as “Everyone Knows That” and also “Ulterior Motives,” based on the lyrics people thought t...
