The UK, Brighton-based music festival The Great Escape – one of our top picks for the unmissable European fests this year – has got a crisis on its hands. 216 artists, making up approximately half of the festival’s line-up, have now signed a statement demanding the festival drop their sponsorship with Barclays in solidarity with Palestine. Eldagsen had created the image using the popular AI-image creating tool DALL-E 2. He turned down the prize, citing his motivation for entering to see if “competitions are prepared for AI images. They are not.” A year on from his famous refusal, the Palmer Gallery in London is hosting an exhibition of his and ot...

Earlier this year, President Emmanuel Macron brought in huge budget cuts to curb France’s exorbitant spending. In February, €10 billion in cuts were announced, in addition to a €16 billion drop in spending that the 2024 budget had already accounted for. While much of the budget cuts have been aimed – controversially – at environmental and medical transport, one of the key areas facing cuts is also the culture sector. Economy minister Bruno Le Maire has announced that France’s culture sector will have its annual budget slashed by €204 million, with the main area to be cut in “artistic creation”...

An argument has been brewing for weeks between France and the UK over new post-Brexit fishing rules. Last month, the UK banned bottom trawling in part of its protected waters. The move is aimed at protecting vulnerable marine habitats as this fishing practice uses heavy nets dragged along the bottom that damage the seafloor. But French fishermen say it threatens their livelihoods and some who depend heavily on these waters claim they are being unfairly targeted. What is the basis of the bottom trawling dispute? The British government announced that the harmful practice was prohibited in certain...
