Washington (AFP) - US President Joe Biden on Monday denounced an "outrageous" application by the International Criminal Court's prosecutor for an arrest warrant for Israel's prime minister and defense minister. Secretary of State Antony Blinken separately warned that efforts to secure a ceasefire in Israel's war on Hamas in Gaza could be harmed by the move by the Hague-based court. ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan is seeking arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, as well as top Hamas leaders, on suspicion of war crimes and crimes against h...

Washington (AFP) - It is "vital and urgent" for the United States and allies to find a way to tap immobilized Russian assets in helping Ukraine, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in prepared remarks released Monday. The excerpts of her speech, to be delivered Tuesday in Frankfurt, come as finance leaders of the Group of Seven industrialized nations are due to gather later this week. G7 allies are warming to a US plan that can raise around $50 billion for Ukraine, the Financial Times reported on Monday. The plan involves a G7 loan backed by future profits from around $350 billion of Russi...

New York (AFP) - Donald Trump's trial on charges of covering up hush money payments to a porn star approached its final stages Monday, with the defense finishing cross-examination of star witness Michael Cohen and closing arguments expected next week. Due to the upcoming holiday weekend as well as legal squabbles over jury instructions, Judge Juan Merchan told the court "we are not going to be able to sum up tomorrow" as he had hoped. It is unclear if the defense will present a case -- they are not required to -- and whether Trump himself would testify. Experts say it is highly unlikely he wil...

Washington (AFP) - The US Supreme Court on Monday rejected an appeal by a Canadian former Guantanamo detainee of his convictions for war crimes committed in Afghanistan. Toronto-born Omar Khadr was 15 years old when he was captured on an Afghan battlefield in 2002 and sent to the US military prison in Cuba. Khadr pleaded guilty in 2010 to murdering a US soldier in violation of the laws of war, attempted murder, conspiracy, providing material support for terrorism and spying. He was sentenced to eight years in prison but was sent home to Canada in 2012 to serve the remainder of his sentence. Kh...

Baltimore (AFP) - The cargo ship that collided with a Baltimore bridge nearly two months ago, collapsing it and killing six highway workers, was refloated on Monday and towed back into port. Live television images of the operation showed a flotilla of tugboats slowly pushing and towing the M/V Dali away from the remains of the shattered Francis Scott Key Bridge and towards a marine terminal. The Key Bridge Response Unified Command said the complex operation involved the Coast Guard, the US Army Corps of Engineers, the Maryland Department of the Environment and other agencies. It said the Dali,...

Washington (AFP) - The US Senate's Democratic leadership will launch a doomed bid this week to resuscitate a sweeping border security bill killed by Republicans as the party of President Joe Biden seeks the upper hand on a key election issue. Polling has repeatedly identified illegal immigration as voters' top concern ahead of November's presidential rematch between Biden and his Republican predecessor Donald Trump, with illegal crossings from Mexico at historic highs. In a weekend letter to senators, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said he would bring the Border Act -- hammered over months of n...

Washington (AFP) - The US Federal Reserve should keep interest rates at their current elevated levels for longer than previously expected due to disappointing recent inflation data, a senior bank official said Monday. The Fed has raised interest rates to a 23-year high and held them there as it looks to bring inflation down to its long-term target of two percent. But despite significant progress last year, the Fed's inflation fight has faced a setback this year, with the rate at which consumer prices are rising accelerating again in the first quarter. Speaking at a conference in the US state...

New York (AFP) - Donald Trump's trial on criminal charges of covering up hush money payments to a porn star to protect his 2016 election campaign could go to the jury next week. Judge Juan Merchan said Monday that "issues" that cropped up over the weekend made it "apparent that we are not going to be able to sum up tomorrow" as he had hoped. He said the goal would now be "finishing up everything this week... so we can have summations first thing next week." The defense is expected to finish its cross-examination of star witness Michael Cohen on Monday, after which the prosecution has said it w...

London (AFP) - WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on Monday won a bid to appeal against a UK court ruling that approved his extradition to the United States to face trial for breaking national security laws. Two London High Court judges granted Assange permission to appeal, having previously asked Washington to provide "satisfactory assurances" about free speech protections at any US trial. Those submissions were presented at a hearing on Monday, which the 52-year-old Australian did not attend. Assange is wanted by Washington for publishing hundreds of thousands of secret US documents from 2010 ...
