Jacksonville (AFP) - As a marching band played and the crowd chanted "four more years," US Vice President Kamala Harris looked like she was enjoying being out of Joe Biden's shadow. From condemning abortion bans to wooing Black voters, the 59-year-old Harris is taking a starring role in Biden's campaign to win a second term by again defeating Donald Trump. But can Harris really be its secret weapon, and defy polls that show US voters still aren't convinced she's the right person to be a heartbeat away from the Oval Office? Harris made US history when she became the first female, Black and Sou...

Strasbourg (France) (AFP) - Italy is allowed to confiscate an ancient Greek bronze fished from the Adriatic in the 1960s and now in the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, Europe's top rights court ruled Thursday. Representing a nude athlete and known in the United States as "Victorious Youth", the statue vanished following its 1964 discovery until its 1977 purchase by the museum. The Getty has since refused to return it to Italy. The museum appealed to the Strasbourg-based European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) after Italy's top tribunal in 2019 upheld an Italian confiscation order for the bronze. Fo...

Washington (AFP) - A US judge on Thursday pushed against the central pleas of both US government and Google lawyers as he heard their closing arguments at a landmark antitrust trial in Washington. Federal Judge Amit Mehta, whose decision is not expected until later in the year, raised his questions during two days of hearings that come six months after the conclusion of testimony. The case is the first of five major lawsuits by the US government to reach trial, with Meta, Amazon, Apple and a separate case against Google also heading for federal court. The trial is the first time the US Departm...

New York (AFP) - The lawyer who negotiated a hush money payment from Donald Trump to a porn star was grilled on Thursday by the former US president's defense attorney, who suggested his activities bordered on "extortion." Trump, 77, is accused of falsifying business records to reimburse his lawyer, Michael Cohen, for a $130,000 payment to X-rated movie actress Stormy Daniels just days ahead of the 2016 election against Hillary Clinton. The trial resumed on Thursday after a day off on Wednesday, with prosecutors urging Judge Juan Merchan to fine the Republican presidential candidate for violati...

Los Angeles (AFP) - Dozens of overturned tents, "Free Palestine" signs strewn on the lawn, keffiyehs and flashlights discarded in haste: not much of the pro-Palestinian protest encampment was left Thursday morning at the University of California, Los Angeles. After a week of occupying a central area of the sprawling campus in protest at Israel's war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, police in riot gear forcibly removed demonstrators in an operation that lasted through the night. In tense scenes, officers used flashbang explosions to disorient protesters and disperse crowds. Eventually, securit...

Washington (AFP) - Academy Award-winning actress Halle Berry joined a group of US senators on Thursday to announce new legislation that would provide tens of millions of dollars towards menopause research and education. "The shame has to be taken out of menopause. We have to talk about this very normal part of our life," said the Hollywood star, who picked up a best actress Oscar for 2001 romantic drama "Monster's Ball." The bill, Advancing Menopause Care and Mid-Life Women's Health Act, is sponsored by senators from both parties and would divert $275 million to research, raising awareness and...

Washington (AFP) - Donald Trump was facing a backlash Thursday after declining to pledge he will accept the results of the 2024 presidential election if he loses, as he repeated his false claims that he was cheated in the 2020 vote. "If everything's honest, I'd gladly accept the results," the Republican former president told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Wednesday. "If it's not, you have to fight for the right of the country." Trump -- who is running for a return to the White House, in what will almost certainly be a re-run of his 2020 face-off with Joe Biden -- made similar remarks ahead ...

Washington (AFP) - US President Joe Biden insisted Thursday that "order must prevail" on college campuses after weeks of turmoil, clashes with police and mass arrests involving student protests against Israel's war with Hamas in Gaza. Biden, who until now had remained tight-lipped on the student unrest, spoke just hours after hundreds of police moved in to forcibly clear a sprawling encampment at the University of California, Los Angeles, tearing down barriers and detaining dozens of protestors. For weeks, authorities on campuses from New York to California have tried to thread the needle betw...

New York (AFP) - TikTok and Universal announced a new licensing agreement Thursday, ending a months-long dispute that saw popular music expunged from the social media platform. The companies released a joint statement that said the new deal included "improved remuneration" for artists and songwriters under the Universal Music Group (UMG) umbrella, and will also assuage concerns over the growth of AI-generated content on TikTok. Universal chairman Sir Lucian Grainge said "this new chapter in our relationship" would "drive innovation in fan engagement while advancing social music monetization." ...

New York (AFP) - US antitrust authorities cleared ExxonMobil's acquisition of Pioneer Natural Resources under the condition that the shale producer's former CEO be barred from the company's board, regulators announced Thursday. A proposed consent order barred longtime Pioneer CEO Scott Sheffield from the ExxonMobil board of directors, citing his "collusive" activity with crude exporters from the OPEC+ group of countries, a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) press release said. The FTC, which has ramped up action against corporate mergers in recent years under chair Lina Khan, said Sheffield's inst...
