New York (AFP) - New York City asked the World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday to rename the monkeypox virus to avoid stigmatizing patients who might then hold off on seeking care. New York has seen more cases of the disease, which the WHO declared a global health emergency over the weekend, than any other city in the United States, with 1,092 infections detected so far. "We have a growing concern for the potentially devastating and stigmatizing effects that the messaging around the 'monkeypox' virus can have on... already vulnerable communities," New York City public health commissioner ...

New York (AFP) - On a hot Sunday afternoon in New York, the epicenter of the US monkeypox outbreak, a long line of men aged 20 to 40 wait for a vaccine to protect themselves and their loved ones against the virus. With its rows of tables and chairs and stacks of medical equipment, the vaccination center -- a high school in Bushwick, Brooklyn -- is reminiscent of a vaccine spot for Covid-19, a virus for which New York was also the US epicenter. Everyone who spoke to AFP while waiting in line said they felt lucky to have gotten an appointment, as New York lacks doses. On Friday, 9,200 time slots...

Washington (AFP) - Children as young as five in the United States will now be able to receive a booster dose of Pfizer's Covid-19 vaccine, the nation's health authorities announced Tuesday. The US Food and Drug Administration authorized children in the 5-11 group to receive the booster in order to "provide continued protection against Covid-19," FDA Commissioner Robert Califf said in a statement. A committee of experts from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is scheduled to meet Thursday on the issue. Children will become eligible for the booster at least five months after...

Windsor (Canada) (AFP) - Canadian demonstrators led by truckers angry over Covid-19 restrictions defied police and kept occupying a key bridge Saturday, while thousands more rallied in the capital as a two-week-old protest showed no signs of abating. The demonstrations have inspired copycat protests that are now spreading around the globe, including to France, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Australia. In Ontario, where authorities have declared a state of emergency, the provincial supreme court had ordered truckers to end their blockade of the strategic Ambassador Bridge, which links the cit...

Montreal (AFP) - Hundreds of Canadian truckers converged on Ottawa Friday for a major demonstration against vaccine mandates to cross the Canada-US border. Coming from as far as British Columbia on the Pacific coast, the "Freedom Convoy", as the truckers have named it, has been growing and drawing more attention in recent days. The meeting point for the weekend rally has been set for Parliament Hill, in the heart of the Canadian capital. Since mid-January, Canada and the United States have imposed a Covid-19 vaccine mandate for truck drivers crossing the border between the two countries, th...

Washington (AFP) - Waving signs denouncing President Joe Biden and calling for "freedom," several thousand people demonstrated in Washington Sunday against what some described as the "tyranny" of Covid-19 vaccine mandates in the United States. Speaker after speaker -- including notorious anti-vaxxer Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who compared vaccine mandates to the Holocaust -- took to the microphone in front of the white marble Lincoln Memorial to decry the rules. Like other Covid restrictions aimed at reining in a disease that has infected more than 70 million people in the United States, killed mo...

Washington (AFP) - Women vaccinated against Covid-19 saw a slight delay in their period of almost a day compared to those who were unvaccinated, a US government-funded study said Thursday. But the number of days of bleeding was not affected, according to the research carried out on nearly 4,000 individuals and published in "Obstetrics & Gynecology." Lead author Alison Edelman of the Oregon Health & Science University told AFP the effects are small and expected to be temporary, a finding that is "very reassuring" as well as validating for those who experienced changes. The study can also help c...

Washington (AFP) - Pfizer announced Friday that it wants to test a third dose of the Covid-19 vaccine in the under-fives, as the low dosage such small children can handle may not offer the same protection that older children enjoy from just two shots. The company does not expect the change to affect its plans to file for emergency use authorization in the United States in the first half of next year. As part of its ongoing clinical trials, the pharmaceutical giant has selected a dosage of three micrograms per injection for children aged six months to less than five years. This is 10 times less...

New York (AFP) - The number of New York firefighters requesting sick leave has surged in recent days in what officials said Monday was a protest against the city's Covid-19 vaccine mandate, though they added that all the firehouses remained open. The mandate for all the city's roughly 378,000 employees kicked in Monday, and those who still refuse to be inoculated risk being put on unpaid leave. They no longer have the option of providing a negative test instead, but medical and religious exemptions will be allowed. New York mayor Bill de Blasio said some 9,000 workers city-wide were going on u...

Washington (AFP) - Effective vaccines, without a needle: Since the start of the Covid pandemic, researchers have doubled down on efforts to create patches that deliver life-saving drugs painlessly to the skin, a development that could revolutionize medicine. The technique could help save children's tears at doctors' offices, and help people who have a phobia of syringes. Beyond that, skin patches could assist with distribution efforts, because they don't have cold-chain requirements -- and might even heighten vaccine efficacy. A new mouse study in the area, published in the journal Science Adv...
