Global wine production reached a historic low in 2023 and climate change could be to blame, a new report has revealed. The International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) says the drink hit its lowest level since 1962. This intergovernmental organisation has 50 member states, representing 75 per cent of the world’s vineyard area. A new exhibition of work by British artist, Damien Hirst is being held at the Château La Coste, a wine estate near Aix-en-Provence. Dozens of sculptures and paintings, including 'Natural History', 'The Secret Gardens Paintings' and new pieces, such as 'The Empresses' are featured in the exhibition. Nearly a century ago, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who inherited the Château Mouton Rothschild in 1922, conceived the idea of transforming the prestigious estate's wine labels into miniature works of art. In 1924, French graphic designer Jean Carlu became the first artist to be commissioned to create an original artwork to illustrate a vintage label. The concept took full flight in 1945 after the war, with each subsequent year featuring labels created by the likes of Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Salvador Dalì, Francis Bacon, and Anish Kapoor. Florence’s airport could soon be home to an unusual feature on its roof - a 7.7-hectare (19 acre) vineyard. US design studio Rafael Viñoly Architects has unveiled plans for a remodelled international terminal at the Italian airport, including the vines which will serve as a nod to Florence’s reputation as the “heart of Italy’s renowned wine country” - Tuscany.
