MLB Draft: Two Huskers Selected on Day 1

An historic night for Nebraska baseball at the Major League Baseball Draft.

Shortstop Brice Matthews and second basemen Max Anderson both heard their names called. This is the first time Nebraska has had two players drafted before the third round since Darin Erstad and Alvie Shepherd were both selected in the first round in 1995.

Matthews was taken No. 28 overall by the Houston Astros. A product of Humble, Texas, Matthews is Nebraska’s highest overall selection since 2005, when third baseman Alex Gordon was chosen No. 2 overall by the Kansas City Royals.

Anderson was selected during the second round at No. 45 overall to the Detroit Tigers. The Omaha native becomes Nebraska’s fourth selection in the top three rounds since 2021.

The duo is the programs second-best two-player showing ever in the MLB Draft.

Excluding the shortened draft in 2020 due to COVID-19, Nebraska has had at least one draft selection in 29 of the last 30 drafts since 1992.
