French cosmetics exports continue upward path in 2023

French exports of cosmetic products rose by 10.8% on the year last year to €21.3 billion ($22.9 billion), with most exports going to France's European neighbours, the FEBEA cosmetic industry association reported in Paris on Thursday.

Germany led Spain and Italy as the largest importers. Exports to the European Union as a whole were up 20.8% to €8.6 billion.

Outside Europe, the United States was the largest importer, followed by China, where exports declined. Exports to the Middle East also fell.

The rise in 2023 came on the back of an 18.8% rise in 2022.

According to FEBEA, France is the world's leading manufacturer of cosmetics, and the sector is a major contributor to the country's trade balance. More than 60% of French production goes to exports.

FEBEA head Emmanuel Guichard said that the industry was continuing to grow despite large differences in the international market, with "Made in France" a major trump card for the sector.
