One dead, more than 20 wounded in shooting after Chiefs parade

One person was killed and more than 20 people were wounded in a shooting in Kansas City, in the US state of Missouri on Wednesday at the conclusion of the Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl victory parade, police said.

"We have confirmed there is one deceased person. Our gunshot wound total has gone up to 22," Kansas City police department chief Stacey Graves said in a news conference after the incident, adding that authorities were still working to determine the total number of victims.

According to the fire department, of the 22 people who sustained gunshot wounds, one died, eight were in "immediately life threatening" condition, seven had "life-threatening injuries" and six sustained "minor injuries."

Graves said that three people were being investigated in relation to the incident.

The police chief emphasized that the background to the crime was still unclear. "Right now we do not have a motive."

The shooting occurred shortly after the Chiefs Super Bowl parade ended, near to a train station close to the event. It was initially unclear whether the crime was connected to the parade.

"Praying for Kansas City," Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

The Chiefs confirmed that their their players, coaches and staff were all safe and accounted for.

"We are truly saddened by the senseless act of violence that occurred outside of Union Station at the conclusion of today's parade and rally," the team said in a statement.

"Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and all of Kansas City. At this time, we have confirmed that all of our players, coaches, staff and their families are safe and accounted for."

Video footage showed a chaotic scene outside the station as officers stormed into the building while people who had been attending the Super Bowl celebration ran for safety.

According to reports, city officials were expecting that the parade would gather a crowd that could top 1 million.

Thousands of fans took over the streets of downtown Kansas City as the Chiefs celebrated their second consecutive Super Bowl win with a big parade across the city.

The Chiefs claimed their fourth Super Bowl overall and third in five seasons on Sunday, when they defeated the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in over-time.
