Jordanian army kills five suspected drug smugglers from Syria

Jordanian security forces on Sunday killed five suspected drug dealers during a foiled smuggling attempt from neighbouring war-torn Syria, the monarchy’s army said.

The army added that four other smugglers were injured during the dawn attempt to smuggle large quantities of drugs from Syria, Jordan’s state news agency Petra reported. The drugs were confiscated.

Jordan has been fighting drug trafficking from Syria for years.

Clashes at the kingdom's northern border, which stretches 362 kilometres, have erupted regularly, as smugglers use it as a transit point for smuggling narcotics to Gulf states.

In January, several people were killed in suspected Jordanian airstrikes on suspected drug smugglers in Syria, according to human rights activists.

Drug trafficking, especially the amphetamine-type stimulant known as Captagon, has flourished in Syria since the conflict began there in 2011.
