Frankfurt strike late but held at home as tennis balls return

Eintracht Frankfurt's hopes of a late surge into the Champions League spots in the Bundesliga suffered a further blow on Sunday as they drew 2-2 at home to faltering Wolfsburg.

It could have been worse for the hosts had Omar Marmoush not struck the equalizer in stoppage time for his 10th of the league campaign.

Fans threw tennis balls and other objects onto to the pitch at the start of the second half despite the German Football League (DFL) abandoning unpopular plans to recruit an external investor last week.

Supporter protests against the proposals had been going on for weeks in the Bundesliga but given the DFL's climb-down, Saturday's matches were largely played without incident.

Why fans in Frankfurt continued the protest was initially unclear - although one banner criticized Volkswagen-owned Wolfsburg.

Despite the late leveller, it is now four league games in a row without a win for the sixth-placed Eagles, who are seven points off a top-four spot with only 11 games left.

Frankfurt, knocked out of the Europa Conference League by Union Saint-Gilloise on Thursday, continued their roller-coaster campaign by going behind to Maxence Lacroix's goal after just 2 minutes.

Left wingback Philipp Max soon equalized on the overlap after a quick break for his first of the season.

But the visitors went back ahead on 36 minutes through a first Wolfsburg goal for January recruit Kevin Behrens.

The former Union Berlin forward netted with a header, but Marmoush's late goal means Wolfsburg are still waiting for their first win since mid-December as coach Niko Kovač remain under pressure.

The draw at Kovač's former side left the Wolves in 12th.

Fourth-placed Borussia Dortmund host Hoffenheim later hoping to boost their cushion in the final Champions League spot over RB Leipzig to four points and leave Frankfurt 10 adrift.

Freiburg visit fourth-bottom Augsburg in the late game.
