'One last try': FSG are about to make big push to bring 44-year-old back to Liverpool - Romano

Fabrizio Romano has said Liverpool owners FSG will make one final push to bring Michael Edwards back to the club as sporting director.

The 44-year-old transfer guru was influential to the Reds’ success under Jurgen Klopp as Edwards masterminded the signings of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

Having left Liverpool in 2022, the Reds have struggled to find a replacement for Edwards, with Jorg Schmadtke taking over the reins last summer on a short-term basis.

Yet according to Romano, Liverpool’s FSG owners are now making one final push to bring Edwards back to the club, though the former Anfield official has shown no sign yet that he will return.

With Klopp due to leave Liverpool at the end of this season, Edwards would be returning to the Merseyside giants in a new era with plenty of uncertainty hanging around the air.

Moreover, given how in demand the sporting director is across all of Europe, Edwards himself might be open to taking on a new challenge rather than returning to Liverpool to help rebuild the club.

Indeed, Edwards’ hesitancy to return to Liverpool is understandable, yet things can change quickly in football, and the Anfield side might be able to convince their former transfer guru to return this summer.

Edwards returning to Liverpool would be quite the surprise given how definitive the sporting director’s exit from the Reds felt back in 2022.

Yet if FSG are able to convince the transfer specialist to come back home, the move could be huge in Liverpool’s post-Klopp era.

The sporting director was influential to the German manager’s success at Liverpool, and Edwards has the qualities and the skills needed to guide the Reds through this next generation of the club, one that could be just as exciting as what happened under Klopp.
