Tax money reaches the Palestinian Authority via Norway

Tax money collected by Israel has flowed back to the Palestinian Authority (PA) via Norway, the Norwegian government announced on Thursday.

In the first transfer in line with a temporary solution, the PA received 407 million shekels ($113.94 million).

More transfers are expected in the coming days.

The money is extremely necessary to ensure that the PA does not collapse, that the Palestinians receive vital services and that teachers and health workers can be paid, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said.

The temporary solution had been reached in which Norway would serve as a stopover for the administration of the funds withheld by Israel following the terrorist attacks by the Palestinian extremist group Hamas on October 7.

After the Hamas attacks, the Israeli security cabinet decided to stop transferring certain parts of this income to the PA for the Gaza Strip in order to prevent the money from going to Hamas.

The PA then refused all transfers from Israel until Israel changed its decision. A week and a half ago, after lengthy negotiations, Norway announced that it had agreed on a temporary solution.

Part of the income that Israel transfers to Norway is to remain in a Norwegian account until the parties involved have agreed on a further step.
