Journalist spots Fernando Alonso’s manager meeting with boss of six-time F1 champions

The manager of Fernando Alonso met with Red Bull team principal Christian Horner during the Bahrain Grand Prix weekend, as spotted by journalist Cihangir Perperik.

Alonso is in the final year of his contract with Aston Martin, having joined the team from Alpine for the 2023 season.

And his manager, Flavio Briatore, has now been seen in discussions with Horner at the opening race of 2024.

Alonso scored eight podiums and finished fourth in the championship in a promising debut season with Aston Martin.

However, the Silverstone-based team could only finish ninth and 10th in Sakhir and appear to have lost ground relative to their rivals.

Red Bull driver Sergio Perez is battling to retain his seat for 2025 as he too approaches the expiry of his contract.

World champion Max Verstappen scored more than twice as many points as the Mexican last season.

Red Bull won 21 of the season’s 22 races, but the Dutchman was responsible for 19 of those victories.

Perez had to hold off Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton for second in the standings, having failed to finish on the podium in 13 events.

Nonetheless, the 34-year-old got off to a strong start this year by completing a Red Bull one-two, behind Verstappen but ahead of the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz.

Fernando Alonso manager meets with Red Bull

Briatore has been seen sitting with Horner in the Red Bull facility in the Bahrain paddock.

It’s unclear at this stage whether they were discussing the availability of Alonso ahead of the 2025 season.

The Spaniard is a two-time F1 world champion but the last of those titles came nearly 20 years ago in 2006, and he hasn’t won a Grand Prix since 2013.

Alonso faces key decision on future

Speaking ahead of the race in Bahrain, Alonso said he would decide whether he wanted to continue his F1 career after a few rounds of the championship.

At 42, he’s the oldest driver on the current grid ahead of former team-mate Lewis Hamilton (39), who will join Ferrari next season.

Aston Martin will hope to keep a driver with Alonso’s track record but Martin Brundle said the veteran looked ‘dispirited’ at times during the race on Saturday.
