Alpine driver Pierre Gasly’s life outside of F1 from net worth to girlfriend

Pierre Gasly is one of the top midfield drivers on the 2024 grid, so here is everything that you need to know about the Formula 1 ace currently racing for the Alpine team.

The Enstone team signed Gasly to replace Fernando Alonso from the 2023 Formula 1 season to create an all-French line-up. He joined compatriot Esteban Ocon at the outfit that Renault owns. The switch also represented Gasly’s farewell from the Red Bull family after nine years.

Gasly joined Carlos Sainz in Red Bull’s driver development programme in 2014 after securing the 2013 Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 title. It was also key for the continued progression of his career. While Gasly has racing in his blood, his family did not have a wealthy background.

Gasly is the son of Jean Jacques Gasly, a former karting, endurance and rally racing driver in his day. Jean Jacques – whose father was also involved in karting – did not pursue his career in racing, however. Pierre was also the only one of his siblings to show any interest in racing.

His first taste of racing came at his local Anneville-Ambourville karting track beside the late Anthoine Hubert. The pair raced together from the age of seven and also attended the same school. Hubert died at the 2019 F1 Belgian GP weekend after a crash in the F2 Feature race.

It was not until Gasly turned 10 in 2006 that he started to race go-karts competitively in the French Minime Championship. He had appeared at the 2005 Coupe de France but only took 21st place. The Frenchman further ended his first championship campaign in 15th position.

Gasly would not win his first go-karting title until 2010, either, when he sealed the KF3 class in Grand Prix Open Karting. It would be the only title he claimed, too, after many third-place and one second-place result. He secured silver at the 2010 CIK-FIA European Championship.

But his switch to single-seaters in the 2011 French F4 Championship returned early promise with a third-place finish. A switch to Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 in 2013 also returned his first single-seater title, plus the attention of Red Bull with a position in their driver academy.

Red Bull moved Gasly into Formula Renault 3.5 for 2014 and he only missed out on the title to Sainz. His switch to the GP2 Series midway through 2014 plus a solid first full season laid the foundations for Gasly to hold off Prema teammate Antonio Giovinazzi for the 2016 title.

Sebastian Buemi’s World Endurance Championship commitments even saw Gasly race with Renault e.dams at the 2017 New York ePrix. He showed instant talent in Formula E, as well, by taking seventh on debut from P19 on the grid before securing fourth in the second race.

All the while Gasly was also racing in Japan’s Super Formula in 2017 and fighting for the title. He would end the term in second place by half a point but had already made his Formula 1 debut for Toro Rosso. Red Bull axed Daniil Kvyat and gave Gasly his seat at the Malaysian GP.

Gasly would ultimately get Kvyat’s seat permanently, only sitting out the 2017 United States GP to see out the Super Formula season. He also stayed at Toro Rosso until 2019 as Red Bull promoted their product to partner Max Verstappen. Yet he only lasted 12 races in the team.

Red Bull chose Gasly to replace Daniel Ricciardo in their main team as the Australian joined Renault. But the Frenchman failed to claim a podium result and scored 63 points to the 181 Verstappen bagged. Yet his return to Toro Rosso led Gasly to secure his debut rostrum in F1.

Gasly held off Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton in a drag race to the finish line to claim P2 at the 2019 Brazilian GP. While Hamilton receiving a stop-and-go penalty for entering the pits while it was closed at the 2020 Italian GP moved Gasly into the lead for his debut win in F1.
