'Not going to get in': Sky pundit thinks Aston Martin and Williams will snub 23-year-old F2 champion for 2025

Aston Martin and Williams will overlook Felipe Drugovich for a 2025 F1 seat, Sky Sports commentator David Croft says.

Drugovich is currently the reserve driver for Aston, who know Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll are both out of contract at the end of the season.

Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant are in the same boat at Williams, but Croft doubts that Drugovich will be the beneficiary.

Drugovich won the F2 championship in 2022, his third season in the F1 feeder series.

He beat Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber reserve Theo Pourchaire and Liam Lawson, who deputised for an injured Daniel Ricciardo at AlphaTauri last season.

Drugovich took part in pre-season testing last year when Stroll was sidelined after a cycling accident.

The Brazilian didn’t get the chance to compete in the Bahrain Grand Prix because the Canadian made a swift return.

He would feature in two F1 weekends, though, with FP1 outings at Monza and Yas Marina.

David Croft sceptical on Felipe Drugovich Aston Martin chances

Speaking on the Sky Sports F1 podcast, Croft said that Aston Martin wouldn’t consider Drugovich unless they lost both of their drivers.

He doesn’t think Williams will seriously consider him, nor does he think Haas will favour the 23-year-old over Ferrari youngster Oliver Bearman.

He said (38:40): “Where does Felipe Drugovich go? He’s not going to get in at Aston Martin unless Fernando and Lance both leave. I don’t think Williams will be an option next year.

“I don’t see Felipe Drugovich fitting into their [Aston Martin’s] future plans. Haas potentially, but [they’ve got] Ollie Bearman and I think, through the Ferrari academy links, he’ll be earmarked there.”

Aston Martin and Williams face big driver calls

Aston Martin will surely be desperate to keep hold of Alonso, who scored eight podiums and finished an excellent fourth in the championship last season.

However, Alonso may have little appetite to fight into the midfield well into his 40s and his manager Flavio Briatore was seen meeting with Red Bull boss Christian Horner in Bahrain.

Stroll, whose father Lawrence owns the team, only finished 10th in the 2023 standings, 132 points behind Alonso.

As for Williams, tying down Albon will be the priority after the former Red Bull driver almost single-handedly dragged them to seventh in last year’s constructors’ championship.

Sargeant scored one point to Albon’s 27 and got off to a difficult start this year too, calling the Bahrain Grand Prix an ‘unfortunate disaster’.
