‘Looks set to be’: Fernando Alonso now shares his verdict on proposed Qiddiya Formula 1 circuit

Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso has reacted to the new Qiddiya circuit being proposed as the future host of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

The Formula 1 paddock heads to Jeddah for the second round of the 2024 season this weekend.

However, the Spaniard has shared his thoughts on the track on Instagram which could be on the F1 calendar as early as 2027.

Alonso reacts to proposed new Qiddiya circuit

Fernando Alonso has enjoyed mixed results on his previous three visits to Saudi Arabia.

He finished out of the points in 2021 before retiring from the race the following year due to a water pressure issue.

However, last year Alonso carried on his surprisingly strong start in Bahrain with Aston Martin by finishing on the podium in Jeddah too.

It was one of eight podium finishes for the 42-year-old that year although it would be more of a surprise to see him standing on the podium on Saturday.

Alonso has seen the Qiddiya circuit for the first time and shared his thoughts on the impressive new track.

He follows Damon Hill who has also had his say on Saudi Arabia’s new proposed event.

Qiddiya Speed Park would be one of F1’s wildest events

Posting on social media after seeing the proposed design, Alonso said: “The proposed new circuit at Qiddiya City looks set to be one of the most impressive facilities for motorsports worldwide.

“With high-speed thrills, incredible elevation, immersive attractions and experiences that’ll excite the fans like never before.”

The Qiddiya circuit features a 20-storey climb to the first corner built up on stilts but it would be a surprise if Alonso was still in Formula 1 when the track is ready.

If it does replace the Jeddah Corniche Circuit in 2027, Alonso will be 45 years old.

While he’s been linked with a move to Mercedes and manager Flavio Briatore was spotted speaking to Red Bull chief Christian Horner, it’s hard to see either team offering him a three-year deal.

But while he’s still quick and enjoying his racing, there will always be a space on the grid for Fernando Alonso.
