At least twelve people were arrested in the Polish capital Warsaw on Wednesday as some protesting farmers tried to break through barriers in front of the parliament building and enter the grounds, police said.
Officers prevented this, the police said on X, formerly Twitter. Several police officers were injured.
Broadcaster TVN24 showed footage with demonstrators throwing paving stones and fireworks at the police. The officers responded with tear gas and water canons.
Officers sealed off the parliament building and asked the crowd to disperse.
In the morning, several thousand farmers marched to the front of the government building. This time they were joined not only by hunters and beekeepers, but also by supporters of the right-wing political spectrum.
Demonstrators used horns, sirens and fireworks to signal that they do not agree with the agricultural policy.
Participants carried placards with messages including "I want to be a farmer, not a slave of Brussels" and "To hell with the traitors of the Polish village."
Tractors and agricultural machinery were not allowed at the demonstration in downtown Warsaw. The police stopped more than a hundred farmers on the outskirts of the city.
Polish farmers have been protesting for weeks against the European Union's Green Deal and against the import of grain and other agricultural products from Ukraine.
They want to prevent cheaper Ukrainian grain from reaching the domestic market.
After Russia's invasion of Ukraine two years ago, Brussels suspended all import tariffs and quotas on agricultural products from Ukraine to help the country economically.
Poland has unilaterally imposed an embargo and is only allowing grain to transit across the border. But some still end up on the Polish market.
