Share of renewables in German energy mix rises to 22% in 2023

Renewable forms of energy contributed 22% to Germany's overall energy mix in 2023, up from 20.8% the year before, the Federal Environmental Agency reported in Berlin on Friday.

The figure, which covers electricity generation, heating and transport, was a "positive development," the agency said.

It attributed the rise to increases in electricity and heat generation from renewables, accompanied by declining demand for energy in all sectors.

Electricity generation from renewables rose 7% to a record 272.4 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2023. A decline in overall consumption led to a record 51.8% share contributed by renewables, with three quarters coming from wind or solar power.

The share of renewables in heating rose to 18.8% from 17.5%, with biomass making the largest contribution of 83%, followed by geothermal energy and heating from heat pumps, with a sharp increase in sales of heat pumps driving the latter.

In the transport sector, renewables contributed 7.3%, up from 6.9% in 2022, with four fifths derived from biodiesel, bioethanol and biomethane.

The agency estimated that around 250 million tons of CO2-equivalent had been saved over the course of 2023 through the use of renewables. It put emissions in 2022 of CO2-equivalent at 750 million tons.
