‘That’s why he played’: Danny Murphy saw 20-year-old Liverpool player doing something brilliant vs Man City

Danny Murphy has now been praising one individual Liverpool performance against Manchester City yesterday.

Although Jurgen Klopp’s side weren’t quite able to get the win at Anfield, many felt that they did deserve three points.

As well as a few wasted chances for Luis Diaz, who was superb otherwise, Liverpool also felt as if they deserved a penalty late on.

Man City’s Jeremy Doku appeared to make contact with Alexis Mac Allister’s chest in the box, having only brushed the ball beforehand.

Peter Drury has recently shared what the VAR officials said on the incident, and on-field decision they were ultimately unwilling to overturn.

That being said, Liverpool were brilliant in the second half in particular.

And when analysing the game on the BBC’s Match of the Day 2, Danny Murphy thought Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott was particularly impressive against City.

Murphy noticed that Elliott was often leading the press against City’s back line, choosing clever moments to apply pressure.

And with a few alternatives sat on the bench, that’s why the pundit ultimately thought Klopp chose to start the 20-year-old.

Unpacking the game, Murphy thought that Elliott played with real enthusiasm.

He said: “Elliott with his intensity in the press, he triggers it a lot. I think that’s why he played in such a big game today.”

Of course, Elliott has been trusted by Klopp on several important occasions now, and were the German not leaving at the end of the season, he’d probably be his next big success story at Anfield.

That’s not to say that the likes of Xabi Alonso or Ruben Amorim couldn’t continue that progress, especially given all the potential the England youngster is showing.

There’s probably an argument to say that Elliott is one of the most understated talents in the Premier League right now, a player with an incredibly high ceiling.

You can perhaps draw parallels between Elliott and Martin Odegaard at Arsenal, two players now in a similar role.

And as Murphy pointed out in his City display, Elliott is now delivering Liverpool performances with a happy blend of creativity and tactical nous, just as Odegaard is doing at the Emirates.

Elliott really is a superb young talent, and one who should be permanent member of the XI soon enough.
