Austrian Airlines cabin staff to strike on Thursday over pay dispute

Lufthansa's Austrian subsidiary Austrian Airlines (AUA) will strike some 110 flights off its schedule this Thursday due to industrial action.

That is almost a third of the planned connections, as AUA said on late on Monday. Routes to and from Germany are also to be affected. Around 9,000 passengers with tickets for the cancelled flights have already been informed by the Austrian airline.

Similar restrictions had already been imposed in recent weeks due to meetings and a strike. The ongoing industrial action stems from faltering wage negotiations with AUA on-board staff.

Management is offering a pay increase of 4.5% and has also signalled its willingness to make one-off payments and improve profit-sharing. The union, on the other hand, is demanding a 30% pay rise.

At Lufthansa, the cabin crew union Ufo has called on flight attendants to take industrial action on Tuesday and Wednesday. The airline assumed on Monday that a total of 1,000 flights would be cancelled in Frankfurt and Munich.

According to a Lufthansa spokesman, a total of around 120,000 passengers will be affected.
